A friend of mine, a businessman, called recently. His marriage was in shambles, finances in disarray, and he told me that he was ready to file bankruptcy. "Before you file bankruptcy," I responded, "I'd like you to consider three questions: What would Jesus do? What would Satan want you to do? And what are your motives? Think about these for several days and then call me."
나의 친구 중에 사업가인 친구 하나가 최근에 전화를 걸어왔다. 그의 결혼생활이 휘청거리고, 재정은 엉망이 되어 파산신청을 하려고 한다는 말을 하였다. “파산신청을 하기 전에 나는 당신이 세가지 질문: 즉, 예수님이라면 어떻게 하실까? 사탄은 당신이 어떻게 하기를 원할까? 그리고 그렇게 하려는 동기는 무엇인가? 등에 대하여 생각하였으면 좋겠네. 이것들에 대하여 여러 날 생각하고 나서 다시 전화하게” 라고 대답하였다.
 
Several days later he called and said, "I have decided it would take five long years to get all our debts repaid and God doesn't want us to live in such pain, so I think it is all right with Him if we file bankruptcy."

Have you ever thought of bankruptcy? I have. In fact, I have been in such bad shape financially that as I looked at the bankruptcy column in the newspaper, I wondered when my name would be listed there.
파산을 고려해 본 적이 있는가? 나는 해본 적이 있다. 사실 나는 재정적으로 아주 어려운 형편에 있었기 때문에 신문에서 파산 칼럼을 볼 때마다 언젠가 내 이름이 거기에 실리지 않을까 생각하고 있었다.

As my friend told me about his circumstances, my thoughts were, "That is nonsense! God doesn't care about your comfort. He cares about your obedience." But I didn't tell him that because I knew it would just scare him off. Instead, I asked, "Do you have a Bible handy?" "Yes," he replied. "Good,” I responded. “Please open it up to Psalm 37. Now, please read verses 16 and 17."

My friend read, "Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked; for the power of the wicked will be broken, but the Lord upholds the righteous." (I have emphasized the words “wicked.”)

"So it doesn't look very good for the 'wicked'."  I commented. "Read verse 20 and you'll see that it gets worse." He continued: "But the wicked will perish: Though the Lord's enemies are like the flowers of the field, they will be consumed, they will go up in smoke.".
“그래서 그것은 ‘악인’들에게 썩 좋은 말로 들리지 않는다.”라고 나는 주석을 달았다. “20절을 읽어보면 더 나쁘다는 것을 알게 될 것이다.” 그는 읽기를 계속하였다: “그러나 악인들은 멸망할 것이요, 여호와의 원수들은 어린 양의 기름처럼 타 버릴 것이니 그들이 연기 속으로 사라질 것입니다.”

Then I asked, "Would you like to know who God says the 'wicked' are?" "Yes," he said. "Then please read verse 21." He read, "The wicked borrow and do not repay, but the righteous give generously."

What will my friend do? I don't know. But one of my mentors took 14 years to pay off a debt illegally created because a major insurance company cheated him and simply said, "Sue us. We can outlast you – so you will lose." His attorney and accountant both told him to file bankruptcy, but he said, "No. I can't do that. God wants me to pay all my bills." To do that, my mentor drove an old automobile for many years and lived very frugally. Throughout that time, I watched as God worked in and through him to touch literally thousands of people.
내 친구는 어떻게 하였을까? 나는 모른다. 그러나 나의 멘토 중에 한 사람은 부채를 상환하는데 14년이 걸렸는데, 그 부채는 보험회사가 그를 속이고 “우리에게 소송을 걸어라. 우리가 당신보다 더 오래 버틸 수 있으니 당신은 패소할 것이다.“라고 아무렇지 않게 말하였으므로 불법적으로 생성된 것이다. 그의 변호사와 회계사는 모두 파산신고를 하라고 그에게 말하였으나 그는, “아닙니다. 나는 그렇게 할 수 없습니다. 하나님은 내가 모든 청구서를 결제하시기를 원하십니다.” 그렇게 하기 위하여 나의 멘토는 고물 자동차를 여러 해 동안 몰았고 매우 검소하게 살았다. 그 기간 동안 나는 하나님이 그 안에서 그리고 그를 통하여 일하시면서 말 그대로 수천 명의 사람들을 만지시는 것을 바라보았다.

My mentor’s example gave me hope and courage to keep taking small steps of faith during my financial trials. It motivated me to do the best I could, even when it didn't seem like that would ever be good enough. As a result, my wife, Liz, and I watched God perform incredible miracles day after day. I don't know what challenges you are or will be facing, but I do know God's standard is living right, and doing right to others, without compromise.

Oswald Chambers has observed, one of the biggest traps we fall into is the belief that if we have faith, God will surely lead us to success in the world…. A life of faith is not a life of one glorious mountaintop experience after another, like soaring on eagles' wings, but is a life of day-in and day-out consistency; a life of walking without fainting (see Isaiah 40:31)…. It is a faith that has been tried and proved and has withstood the test."
