위로부터 지침을 구하는 일

The first time I ever drove a car equipped with a GPS (Global Positioning System), I felt like a child in a candy store. I had rented a car while on a business trip in a large city and for the first time I did not have to worry about using confusing maps or trying to follow written directions from some travel service to find my destination. All I had to do was indicate my destination; the GPS box provided me with both visual and audio directions, taking me from where I was at that moment to where I needed to be.
처음 내가 GPS (전 지구 위치확인 시스템)을 장착한 차를 운전하였을 때 나는 과자가게 안에 있는 어린아이와 같은 느낌이었다. 차 한대를 임대하여 대도시 안에서 사업차 여행을 하였는데 처음으로 나는 목적지를 발견하기 위하여 혼란스러운 지도를 사용하거나 여행 안내서를 따라가는 걱정을 할 필요가 없었다. 내가 하여야 할 일의 전부는  나의 목적지를 표시하는 것이었고, GPS 상자가 시각과 청각에 의한 지침을 내려 내가 그 당시 있던 곳에서 내가 가야 할 곳으로 데려가 주었다.

As I understand it, this system somehow communicates with a satellite orbiting many miles over head, which then pinpoints the users’ locations and guides them to wherever they want to go. Since I am one of those people that I would describe as “directionally challenged” – lacking a natural sense of direction – being told where and when to turn, along with the distance that I needed to travel, seemed amazing. I literally was receiving my directions from above.
내가 아는 바로는 이 시스템으로 우리 머리 위에서부터 여러 마일 떨어져 궤도를 돌고 있는 위성과 교신하여 사용자의 위치를 포착하고 그들을 가기 원하는 곳으로 인도한다. 나는 “방향치” – 방향에 대하여 타고난 감각이 부족한 – 라고 불리는 사람들 중에 하나이기 때문에 방향을 틀어야 할 때와 장소를 가야 할 거리와 함께 말하여 주는 것은 놀라운 일로 보였다. 나는 말 그대로 위로부터 지침을 받고 있었다.

Today many vehicles come equipped with GPS devices. You also can purchase them through an electronics store, and now cell phones have similar options to offer people that share my directional dysfunction. How wonderful: Directions from on high, for only a small fee.
오늘날 많은 차량들이 GPS장치를 장착하고 다닌다. 우리는 또한 그것을 전자제품 가게에서 구입할 수 있고 지금은 휴대전화가 나처럼 방향기능장애가 있는 사람들에게 유사한 선택사양을 제공한다. 얼마나 신기한 일인가: 높은 곳으로부터 오는 지침을 소액의 요금으로 받을 수 있다니.

In reality, however, this was not really the first time that I had received directions from above. In a different sense, I had been receiving directional guidance for years – and best of all, it came free of charge. All that was required was a simple, humble prayer and a willingness to read and follow what God teaches through His Word, the Bible. I cannot begin to calculate the number of times God has given me direction – in my career, my marriage and family life, as well as in dealing with a variety of pressing financial and health problems.
하지만, 사실은 그것이 내가 위에서 오는 지침을 실제로 처음 받은 때가 아니었다. 다른 의미에서 나는 여러 해 동안 방향안내를 받고 있었고 무엇보다 좋은 것은 그것이 무료라는 것이다. 하여야 할 일의 전부는 간단하고 겸손한 기도와 하나님께서 그분의 말씀인 성경을 통하여 가르치는 것을 읽고 따르는 것이었다. 나는 하나님께서 나에게 지침을 주신 회수 – 나의 진로에 대하여, 나의 결혼과 가정생활뿐만 아니라 긴급한 재정 및 건강 문제에 대하여 – 를 셀 엄두조차 낼 수 없다.
The 16th chapter of Proverbs, found in the Old Testament of the Bible, gives a sampling of ways God can provide direction when we need it. For instance, Proverbs 16:9 says, “In his heart a man plans his course, but the Lord determines his steps.” I recall in 1981 starting a search for a new job. I had been editor of a large community newspaper for three years and knew it was time for a career change. I had expected to move to another newspaper, but also had personal goals to one day write a book and do some magazine writing. Instead of a newspaper, God directed me to CBMC, which I had never heard of before. There my job description included writing books and editing the organization’s magazine. My heart’s desire, professionally speaking, would be fulfilled.  
구약성서 잠언 16장은 하나님이 우리가 필요할 때 지침을 주시는 방식의 본보기를 보여준다. 예를 들면 잠언 16:9에서 “사람이 마음으로 자기 앞길을 계획한다 해도 그 걸음은 여호와께서 이끄신다” 라고 말씀하신다. 나는 1981년에 새로운 직장을 찾기 시작하던 일을 회상해 본다. 나는 그당시 3년 동안 지역 신문의  편집인이었는데 진로를 변경할 때가 되었음을 알았다. 나는 다른 신문사로 옮기는 것을 기대하였으나 또한 언젠가 책을 쓰고 또한 잡지를 만들고자 하는 개인적인 목표도 갖고 있었다. 신문사 대신에 하나님은 나를 CBMC로 인도하셨는데 그것에 대하여는 내가 전에 들어본 적이 없었다. 거기에서 나의 업무내용은 책을 쓰고 그 조직의 잡지를 편집하는 일이었다. 전문직업적인 관점으로 말하자면, 내 마음 속의 욕구가 충족될 수 있을 것 같았다.

In Proverbs 16:3, we are told, “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed.” Many times before beginning a project, or sometimes when I am in the midst of one and suddenly find myself at a dead end, I pause to acknowledge that my work is actually an ｅxpression of the gifts, experience and skills God has given to me. I thank Him for the opportunities that lie ahead, ask for His wisdom and direction, and faithfully – and amazingly – He provides the insight and ideas I need to proceed.
잠언 16:3에서 우리는 “네가 하는 일을 여호와께 맡겨라. 그러면 네가 생각하는 것이 이루어질 것이다” 라는 말씀을 듣는다. 하나의 프로젝트가 시작되기 전에 여러 차례, 혹은 내가 한 프로젝트 가운데 있으면서 나 자신이 돌연 막다른 골목에 다다른 것을 알았을 때 나는 멈추어 나의 일이 사실상 하나님이 나에게 주신 재능, 경험 그리고 솜씨의 표현임을 인정하게 된다. 나는 앞에 놓인 기회에 대하여 감사하고, 그분의 지혜와 지침을 구하고, 그리고 성실하게 – 그리고 놀랍게도 – 하나님은 내가 앞으로 나아가는데 필요한 통찰력과 아이디어를 제공하신다.

But there is one condition to the divine direction from above that is available to us – we have to accept it. Proverbs 16:20 assures us, “Whoever gives heed to instruction prospers, and blessed is he who trusts in the Lord.” Like a child that refuses to listen to a parent’s advice, we cut ourselves off from God’s wisdom if we fail to follow the direction He provides. But if we do follow it, we discover our Father does know best!
그러나 위에서 우리에게 주시는 하나님의 지침에는 하나의 조건이 있는데 – 우리는 그것을 받아드려야 한다는 것이다. 잠언 16:20은 우리에게 “일을 지혜롭게 처리하는 사람은 잘되고 여호와를 믿는 사람은 누구나 복이 있다” 라고 확언한다. 부모님의 충고에 귀 기울이기를 거부하는 아이처럼 우리는 하나님이 주시는 지침을 따르지 않으면 하나님의 지혜로부터 단절된다. 그러나 우리가 그것을 따르면 우리의 아버지께서 가장 잘 알고 계심을 발견한다.
