직업에 대한 만족 – 진정한 하나님의 선물

An audience of future entrepreneurs left a conference where I had spoken somewhat confused. My topic had been, "The Ins and Outs of Buying a Business." one theme I emphasized was the importance of having passion. I assured them that if you lack enthusiasm for what you do, there will be days when you do not want to get out of bed – and without having genuine passion for your work, you might not.
미래의 기업가 청중들은 내가 연설을 한 회의장을 다소 혼란스러운 마음으로 떠났다. 나의 주제는 “사업체를 매입하는 일의 안과 밖”이었다. 내가 강조한 한 가지 주제는 열정을 갖는 일의 중요성이다. 나는 그들에게 당신이 하는 일에 대한 열정이 부족하면 잠자리에서 나오고 싶지 않은 날이 올 것이라고 분명하게 말하였고 – 그리고 하는 일에 대하여 진정한 열정이 없으면 그렇게 될지도 모른다.

This simple truth I communicated, which was biblically based, did not seem to set well with the presenter that followed me to the podium. He was a peddler of franchises, determined to recruit as many people as he could to join his business and sell his products. So he decided to spend much of his talk attempting to refute all that I had said about passion. His contradictory theme was that if you can make money, what does it matter whether you like what you do? After all, he suggested, isn't money all you need to make you happy?
내가 발표한 이 단순한 진리는 성경에 근거한 것이었는데, 나 다음으로 연단에 선 발표자와 의견이 일치하지 않는 것 같았다. 그는 가맹점을 운영하는 상인이었는데 자기 사업에 참여하여 제품을 판매하도록 가능한 한 많은 사람들을 채용할 작정이었다. 그래서 그는 내가 열정에 관하여 말한 것 모두를 반박하기 위하여 이야기의 많은 부분을 할애하기로 작정하였다. 그가 반박하는 내용은 우리가 돈을 벌 수 있다면 하는 일을 좋아하든 안 하든 무슨 문제가 있겠는가 하는 것이었다. 결국 그가 의미하였던 것은 돈이 우리를 행복하도록 하는데 필요한 전부가 아니겠는가 하는 것이다.

It is not all you need, at least according to King Solomon of Israel, the man God anointed as the wisest man on earth.  Solomon wrote in Ecclesiastes 5:18-19, "Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him – for this is his lot.  Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work – this is a gift of God."
적어도 하나님이 이 땅 위에서 가장 지혜로운 사람으로 기름 부으신 자인 이스라엘의 왕 솔로몬의 말에 따르면 전혀 그렇지 아니하다.  솔로몬은 전도서 5:18-19에서 “내가 깨닫게 된 것은 하나님께서 사람에게 주신 생애 동안 해 아래에서 먹고 마시고 열심히 일해서 보람을 얻는 것이 가장 선하고 분수에 합당하다는 것이다. 이것이 사람이 받은 몫이다. 만약 하나님께서 부와 재산을 주셔서 누리게 하시고 또 제 몫으로 챙길 힘을 받게 하신 사람은 그것이 하나님의 선물임을 알아야 할 것이다.” 라고 썼다.

According to responses to surveys conducted by a highly respected opinion research organization, which was widely reported in the media several years ago, eight out of 10 workers have consistently responded that they were satisfied with their work. However, if you realize that you are one of the two in ten that are not satisfied with their work, ask yourself why: Are you staying at your job solely for the money? Do you have any options, any alternatives for jobs that would provide you with more fulfillment while still also satisfying your lifestyle needs?
여러 해 전에 언론 매체에 널리 보도되었던 바와 같이, 높은 평가를 받고 있는 한 여론조사 기관이 시행한 조사에 대하여 답변한 것을 보면, 열 중에 여덟은 일관성 있게 자신이 하는 일에 만족한다고 대답하였다. 하지만 만약 당신이 자신의 일에 만족하지 않는 둘 중에 하나라는 것을 깨닫게 되었다면 왜 그런지 스스로에게 물어라: 오로지 돈을 위해서만 당신이 하는 일을 계속하고 있습니까? 직업이 생활에 필요한 것들을 충족시키면서 그 직업이 당신에게 더 많은 만족을 줄만한 선택의 여지를 당신은 갖고 있습니까? 

If you don't feel your job is a gift from God, the money you earn won't keep you content for long. The euphoria experienced from a substantial pay increase or promotion soon fades, while the drudgery of a job that you don’t enjoy remains. In 1 Timothy 6:6-8, we are told that if material abundance is our goal, it is the wrong motivation: “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”
직업이 하나님이 주신 선물이라는 느낌이 없을 때 돈을 벌어도 그 돈이 당신을 오래 동안 만족하게 하지 않을 것이다. 대폭적인 급여인상이나 진급으로부터 오는 행복감은 곧 사라지고 즐겁지 않은 직업이 주는 귀찮은 일들만 남는다. 디모데전서 6:6-8는 우리에게 물질적인 풍요로움이 우리의 목적이라면 그것은 동기부여가 잘못 된 것이라고 말씀하신다: “그러나 스스로 만족하는 마음이 있으면 경건은 큰 유익이 된다. 우리가 세상에 아무것도 갖고 온 것이 없으니 떠날 때도 아무것도 갖고 갈 수 없다. 우리가 먹을 것과 입을 것이 있으면 이것으로 만족해야 한다.”

So if you realize that you are among the ranks of the “working discontented,” pray and ask God to help you find a career you love. If you have that, you will discover that your contentment will keep you amply occupied, regardless of how money you earn. Job fulfillment, over the long term, will always bring more contentment than financial compensation alone.
당신이 “하는 일에 만족하지 못하는” 부류에 속한 것을 깨닫게 되면 하나님께 기도하고 당신이 좋아하는 일을 찾게 하여 달라고 요청하라. 그것을 갖게 되면 돈을 얼마나 벌든 관계 없이 당신은 만족감으로 넉넉히 채워질 것이다. 직업에 대한 만족감은 장기적으로 금전적인 보상보다 항상 더 많은 만족을 가져다 줄 것이다.
