For a number of years it has been my privilege to edit and often write “Monday Manna” each week. It is very encouraging to hear about people around the world who have benefited from these e-mails because of many people who translate it into more than a dozen languages, including Spanish, German, Korean, Chinese, Hungarian, French, Italian, Portuguese, Dutch, and most recently, Japanese. It is my heartfelt conviction the Bible provides a wealth of wisdom and practical insight for the business and professional world that is unsurpassed by any other resource. But I did not always believe this.

In the late 1970s, I was a newspaper editor that believed in God in a generic sense. If you had asked then, however, what relevance I thought the Bible had for my work – or my everyday life, for that matter – I would have probably responded, “Not much.” My relationship with God consisted of attending church once a week and – during the occasional crisis that seemed beyond my control – a frantic moment of prayer asking for His help (which I promptly forgot about once the crisis had passed).

Then I became editor and publisher of a newspaper in another city and began attending another church. The pastor of this congregation had at one time been a newspaper reporter and communicated in a way I could relate to easily. He helped me to understand the Bible is practical and relevant for every aspect of life, including work, marriage, family life, finances, relationships, even recreation. The following is just a sampling of what I have learned just from the Bible’s book of Proverbs during the years since then:

God will guide my life and career. After years of agonizing about what direction my career should take, I realized that God had a special, unique plan for me – and that I could trust Him to know what was best for me and my family. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).
하나님은 나의 삶과 진로를 인도하실 것이다. 여러 해 동안 나의 진로를 어떤 방향으로 잡을 것인지 고민한 후에 나는 하나님이 나를 위한 특별하고 독특한 계획을 가지셨다는 것 – 그리고 나와 내 가족을 위하여 최선이 무엇인지 아는 일에 하나님을 믿고 의지할 수 있다는 것을 깨달았다. “너는 마음을 다하여 여호와를 의뢰하고 네 명철을 의지하지 말라 너는 범사에 그를 인정하라 그리하면 네 길을 지도하시리라” (잠언 3:5-6).

God will bless my plans. Time after time, I have found that as I do my business and personal planning with the intention of honoring God, enables me to achieve far more than I could have imagined. “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and your plans will succeed” (Proverbs 16:3).
하나님은 나의 계획을 축복할 것이다. 시간이 지나가면서 나는 하나님께 영광을 돌리려는 생각을 갖고 나의 사업과 개인적인 계획을 함으로써 내가 상상할 수 있는 것보다 훨씬 크게 이룰 수 있음을 발견하였다. “너의 행사를 여호와께 맡기라 그리하면 너의 경영하는 것이 이루리라” (잠언 16:3).

God will reveal my motives. Often I have wondered, “What am I doing – and am I doing it for the right reasons?” As I have prayed, God has helped me to answer those questions honestly and, if necessary, make appropriate corrections if my underlying intentions are wrong. “All a man’s ways seem right to him, but the Lord weighs the heart” (Proverbs 21:2).
하나님은 나의 동기를 드러내 주실 것이다. 가끔 나는 “내가 무엇을 하고 있나 – 그리고 내가 그 일을 올바른 이유로 하고 있나?”라고 의문을 제기하여 왔다. 내가 기도를 하니까 하나님께서 그러한 질문에 솔직하게 대답하도록 도와 주셨고, 필요에 따라 내 마음 속의 의도가 잘못 되었을 때 적절하게 교정하여 주셨다. “사람의 행위가 자기 보기에는 모두 정직하여도 여호와는 심령을 감찰하시느니라” (잠언 21:2).

God will restrain my tongue. I have always had a tendency to speak in haste before thinking, causing a lot of hurt for family, friends and colleagues in the process. God has taught me that often it is wiser to say nothing, waiting until the emotion of the moment has passed so I can respond more wisely. “When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise” (Proverbs 10:19).
하나님은 나의 혀를 제어하실 것이다. 나는 항상 생각하기 전에 급하게 말하는 경향이 있어 가족, 친구, 그리고 동료들에게 많은 상처를 주곤 하였다. 하나님은 아무 말도 하지 말고 그 순간의 감정이 가라앉아 좀 더 현명한 대답을 할 수 있도록 기다리는 것이 때로는 현명하다는 것을 가르쳐 주셨다. “말이 많으면 허물을 면키 어려우나 그 입술을 제어하는 자는 지혜가 있느니라” (잠언 10:19).

God will teach me humility. We often think of personal setbacks and failures as “tests,” but a true test of character is also how we respond to our successes – and when people speak well of us. Do we puff up with pride, or can we accept praise humbly, grateful for opportunities we have received, the giftedness we were born with, and the people who have helped us along the way? “The crucible for silver and the furnace for gold, but man is tested by the praise he receives” (Proverbs 27:21).
하나님은 나에게 겸손을 가르치실 것이다. 우리는 종종 개인적인 결함과 실수를 “시험”이라고 생각하지만, 진정한 성품의 시험은 또한 우리가 성공하였을 때 – 그리고 사람들이 우리를 칭찬할 때 어떻게 반응을 하느냐 하는 것이다. 자만심으로 우쭐댈 것인가, 아니면 칭찬을 겸손히 받아들이고, 우리가 받은 기회와 선천적으로 받은 재능과 과정에서 우리를 도와준 사람들에게 감사할 수 있을 것인가? “도가니로 은을, 풀무로 금을, 칭찬으로 사람을 시련하느니라” (잠언 27:21).

Then he concluded that the Bible is the greatest, most profound book on business ever published. How would you respond to that comment?
