A powerful scene in the theatrical film, "Amazing Grace," communicates a powerful point that many people – including those in the business professional world – have profoundly misunderstood through the centuries. In the movie, William Wilberforce, the 19th century British abolitionist, struggles with what to do with his new found faith – he wonders how to make it a meaningful part of his everyday life and responsibilities.
연극영화, “놀라운 은혜”는 강력한 인상을 주는 한 장면을 통하여, 많은 사람들이 – 사업과 전문직 분야 사람들을 포함하여 – 여러 세기에 걸쳐 심각한 오해를 하여온 하나의 강력한 시사점을 전하여주고 있다. 그 영화에서 19세기 영국의 노예폐지론자인 윌리엄 윌버포스는 자신이 새로 발견한 믿음을 어찌하여야 할지 고심하면서 – 그는 어떻게 믿음을 매일의 삶과 의무 가운데 의미 있는 한 부분이 되게 할 수 있을까 궁리한다.
 
As he wrestles with this critical issue of faith and practice, Mr. Wilberforce receives several visitors who have been told about his dilemma. These people all were abolitionists, ardently opposed to slavery, and knew of Mr. Wilberforce's political passion and skill, especially in his own opposition to slavery.
 윌버포스 씨가 믿음과 실천이라는 중요한 문제와 씨름하고 있을 때 그가 처한 딜레마에 대하여 이야기를 듣고 찾아오는 여러 방문객들을 맞았다. 이 사람들은 모두 노예폐지론자들로서 노예제도에 대하여 격렬하게 반대를 하였고 윌버포스 씨의 정치적인 열정과 재간, 특히 노예제도를 반대하는 일에 대하여 잘 알고 있었다.

 "We understand that you are having difficulty deciding whether to do the work of God or the work of a political activist," one of the men said to him candidly. The woman in the group then drove home the point with surgical precision. "We humbly suggest you can do both." As a result, he became instrumental in the dissolution of slavery in his homeland.
“우리는 당신이 하나님의 일을 할까 아니면 정치활동을 할까 결정하는데 어려움을 겪고 있다고 알고 있다,”라고 그 들 중 한 사람이 그에게 진솔하게 말하였다. 그 그룹의 한 여인은 아주 정확하게 핵심을 찔렀다. “우리는 당신이 두 가지 모두 할 것을 겸허하게 제안한다.” 그 결과 그는 고국의 노예제도를 폐지하는 일에 도구로 사용되었다.
 
Many followers of Jesus Christ operate under the belief that value in God's eyes comes only from entering "full-time ministry." In essence, this means leaving their business or professional jobs to pursue careers directly affiliated with churches, mission agencies or “parachurch’ ministries. In many cases, unfortunately, this is a tragedy that results in a terrible waste of gifts, expertise and experience.
예수 그리스도를 따르는 많은 사람들이 하나님이 보시기에 가치 있는 것은 오직 “전임 사역”에 종사함으로부터 온다는 믿음 하에 사역을 한다. 본질적으로 이것은 사업이나 전문직 일을 떠나 교회, 전도단체나 기독교 단체와 직접적으로 연관이 있는 직업에 종사하는 것을 의미한다. 수 많은 경우에, 불행히도 이것은 재능, 전문지식 그리고 경험의 엄청난 낭비를 초래하는 비극이 되고 있다.

God has made each of us with unique talents and has given us the opportunity to develop distinctive skills. When we mistakenly come to the conclusion that only missionaries or pastors have special, high callings from God, we miss His best for our lives. As a result, we may either leave work where God could have used us in extraordinarily fruitful ways for His purposes or, plagued by the feeling that our work is not important in God’s grand scheme, we underutilize the gifts we have received.
하나님은 우리 각자를 독특한 은사와 함께 창조하셨고 우리가 특유의 기술을 개발하도록 기회를 주셨다. 우리가 선교사나 목사 만이 하나님으로부터 특별하고 고상한 소명을 받았다는 결론에 잘못 도달하면 그 분이 우리의 삶을 위하여 주신 가장 좋은 것을 놓치게 된다. 그 결과 하나님이 그 분의 목적을 위하여 유난히 많은 결실을 맺는 방법으로 우리를 사용하실 수 있는 직업을 우리가 그만 두거나, 혹은 하나님의 웅장한 계획 안에서 우리가 하는 일이 중요하지 못하다는 생각에 빠져 받은 재능을 충분히 사용하지 못하게 될지도 모른다.
 
In his first letter to the church in the ancient city of Corinth, the apostle Paul wrote, only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches” (1 Corinthians 7:17).
사도 바울은 고대 도시 고린도의 교회에 쓰는 편지에서, “오직 주께서 각 사람에게 나눠 주신 대로 하나님이 각 사람을 부르신 그대로 행하라 내가 모든 교회에서 이와 같이 명하노라“ (고린도전서 7:17)라고 썼다.
 
Imagine a world in which everyone that claimed allegiance and devotion to Jesus Christ – called “Christians” in the Bible - served only as pastors and missionaries. Who would reach the people in the workplaces of the world? Who would provide the food, shelter, clothing, and other necessities that are essential for carrying out God's plan? Who would start businesses or lead our governments? To withdraw from being an integral, contributing part of the so-called “secular” work world (the Bible makes no such distinction) would be disastrous. Even worse, to do so is not God's plan.
예수 그리스도와 연합하였거나 헌신하였다고 선언하는 사람마다 – 성경에서 “그리스도인”이라 칭함 – 모두 목사와 선교사로서만 섬기는 세상을 상상하여 보라. 누가 세상의 직장에 있는 사람들에게 다가갈 수 있겠는가? 누가 하나님의 계획을 실행하는데 필수적인 음식, 거처, 의복, 그리고 기타 필요한 물건들을 제공하겠는가? 누가 사업을 시작하고 우리의 정부를 이끌어 가겠는가? 소위 “세속적”인 직업 세계(성경에는 그러한 구분이 없음)에 기여하고 없어서는 안 될 위치에서 물러서는 것은 재앙이다. 더 나쁜 점은 그렇게 하는 것이 하나님의 계획이 아니라는 것이다.
 
If you are wondering whether to leave your current job to go into vocational ministry on a full-time basis, remember we all are called to be in ministry to others, regardless of where we work. Consider the sage advice of Wilberforce's friends: You can do both!
지금 하고 있는 일을 떠나 전임으로 전문 사역에 종사하여야 할지 궁리하고 있다면 우리 모두가 어디에서 일하고 있든 관계 없이 다른 사람들을 위하여 목회를 하도록 부름 받았다는 사실을 기억하라. 윌버포스의 친구가 한 현명한 충고를 생각하라: 당신은 두 가지 다 할 수 있다!
