과거를 회상하고 미래를 바라보다

For most of us, the start of every New Year brings excitement and anticipation for what we might expect over the next 12 months. I often find it fun to envision the wonderful things the future holds for me and my family. Rarely, however, do I take much time to reflect over the year that has just ended, especially considering the many instances of God’s faithfulness that I have experienced.
우리들 대부분은 매년 새해 벽두에 다가오는 12개월에 대하여 우리가 거는 흥분과 기대감을 갖게 된다. 나는 종종 미래가 나와 내 가족에게 펼쳐줄 놀라운 일들을 그려보는 일이 재미 있음을 발견한다. 하지만 방금 마감한 한 해를 돌아보는 일, 특히 내가 체험하였던 하나님의 여러 신실하신 순간들을 생각하는 데는 별로 많은 시간을 할애하지 않는다.

Typically, my mindset has been along the lines of, “What is past is past. Let’s move on.” Unfortunately, having such a flawed, one-directional view results a tendency to miss out on the encouragement and confidence that I receive whenever I pause long enough to spend time examining what God has done over the preceding year.
대체적으로 나의 사고 방식은 “과거는 과거일 뿐이다. 앞으로 나아가자.”고 하는 것이다. 불행하게도 그렇게 잘 못된 일방적인 견해로 인하여 나는 하나님이 지난 한 해 동안 하신 일을 살피는 충분한 시간을 가질 때 얻게 되는 격려와 믿음을 놓쳐버리는 결과를 초래한다.

 
God has always realized His people’s need for reminders of His kindness and faithfulness in their lives. In Exodus 12, after 430 years of captivity to the Egyptians, we are told that God readied the people of Israel for deliverance. He forewarned them that He would strike down every firstborn son of Egypt, but was going to pass over the Israelites’ first born if they would sacrifice an unblemished lamb and put the blood of the lamb on their doorposts.
하나님은 항상 자기 백성들이 원하는 것을 실현시킴으로써 그들의 삶 가운데 하나님의 친절하심과 신실하심을 상기시켜 주신다. 출애굽기 12장에서, 430년 동안 애굽 사람들에게 포로로 잡혀 있었던 이스라엘 백성을 하나님께서 구하려고 준비시켰다고 한다. 하나님은 애굽의 모든 처음 난 아들은 치실 것이나, 이스라엘의 처음 난 아이는 흠 없는 양을 잡아서 그 피를 문지방에 바르면 치지 않고 넘어가시겠다고 미리 경고를 하셨다.

Through this unprecedented act, God gave to the Israelites a new beginning. As a result, they received a New Year, beginning with the Hebrew month of Abib. For thousands of years since then, descendents of the Israelites have celebrated the Passover as a memorial to what God did for them. The significance of that annual ritual is an encouragement and reminder to the chosen people of God of how they were saved and protected as a people by God.
이 유례 없는 행위를 통하여 하나님은 이스라엘 사람들이 새롭게 시작하도록 하셨다. 그 결과 그들은 아빕 월로 시작되는 새해를 맞았다. 그 후 수 천년 동안 이스라엘의 후손들은 하나님께서 하신 일을 기념하기 위하여 유월절을  경축하였다. 그 연례 의식의 의의는 하나님이 선택한 백성들에게 격려가 되고 그들이 어떻게 하나님에 의하여 구원을 받고 보호를 받았는지 상기시켜준다.
 
God said in Exodus 12:26-27, “And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you? Then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to the Lord, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.”

Like the Israelites – and modern-day Jews – we should make it a point to sto
p from our relentless march toward the future to consider how God has worked in our lives in the recent past.
하나님은 출애굽기 12:26-27에서 “이후에 너희 자녀가 묻기를 ‘이 예식이 무슨 뜻이냐’ 하거든 너희는 이르기를 ‘이는 여호와의 유월절 제사라 여호와께서 애굽 사람을 치실 때에 애굽에 있는 이스라엘 자손의 집을 넘으사 우리의 집을 구원하셨느니라’ 하라“라고 말씀하셨다. 이스라엘 사람들처럼 – 그리고 현대의 유대인들처럼 – 우리는 미래를 향하여 가차 없이 나아가는 일을 잠시 멈추고 하나님께서 가까운 과거에 우리의 삶 가운데 어떻게 역사하였는지 생각하여야 한다.
 
If you ponder for long enough the wondrous things God has done for you in the past, I am certain that it will serve as inspiration to enable you to move forward with confidence.
하나님께서 과거에 당신을 위하여 하신 놀라운 일들을 충분히 생각하면 그로 인하여 믿음을 가지고 전진할 수 있도록 격려를 받게 된다고 나는 확신한다.

As 2007 draws to a close and 2008 makes its debut, we will all be busy making plans and setting goals for the upcoming year. And it would be unwise not to do so. However, please do not underestimate the value of celebrating God’s goodness to you over the last year. You may be amazed to remember how much He has done.
2007년이 끝나가고 2008년이 시작되면서 우리는 계획을 세우고 다가오는 해에 대한 목표를 세우느라고 모두 바쁠 것이다. 그리고 그렇게 하지 않는 것은 현명하지 못할 것이다. 하지만 하나님이 지난 해에 당신에게 하신 좋은 것들을 경축하는 일의 가치를 평가절하하지 말라. 그분이 얼마나 많은 일을 해 주셨는지 돌아보면 놀랄 것이다.

As we strive to work with integrity throughout the coming year, let us all take confidence in the fact that God has modeled integrity for us in the past – and will continue to do so in the future!
우리가 오는 한 해 동안 성실하게 일하려고 노력하면서 하나님께서 과거에 우리에게 성실함의 본보기가 되어 주셨고 – 그리고 미래에도 계속하여 그렇게 하실 것이라는 믿음을 갖자!
