부자가 되는 가장 빠르고, 가장 믿음직한 길

“Get rich quick.” To some people, these are the most exciting words they could ever imagine, rivaling or even surpassing, “I love you.” Some of us fantasize about what it would be like to win millions in a state or national lottery, or have a wealthy relative leave a huge bequest to us after his or her passing. For several years, a popular American TV game show was called, “So You Want to Be a Millionaire!” It never suffered from a shortage of contestants.
“벼락부자가 되다.” 어떤 사람들에게는 이것이 상상을 초월하는 가장 신나는 말로써 “당신을 사랑합니다.”라는 말을 필적하거나 능가하기도 한다. 우리들 중에 어떤 사람은 주 복권이나 전국 복권에서 수백만 불을 타거나, 또는 사후에 막대한 유산을 물려줄 부자 친척이 있으면 어떤 기분일까 하고 공상을 한다. 여러 해 동안 미국에서 인기 있는 TV 게임 쇼는 “그래서 우리는 백만장자가 되고 싶어한다!”라고 하는 것이다. 그 게임 쇼는 한 번도 응하는 사람들이 부족한 적이 없었다.

Of course, we also have heard about industrious entrepreneurs that have gained unimaginable riches. Some of them parlayed unique or innovative products or services into highly profitable businesses; others simply stumbled across an idea and capitalized on it, experiencing the good fortune of just happening to be in the right place at the right time.
물론 우리는 상상할 수 없는 부를 취득한 근면한 기업인들에 관하여도 이야기를 들어왔다. 그들 중에 어떤 사람들은 독특하거나 혁신적인 제품 또는 서비스를 수익성이 높은 사업에 활용하였고, 다른 사람들은 그저 우연히 어떤 아이디어를 얻어 거기에 투자함으로써 좋은 시기에 좋은 자리에 우연히 있게 되는 행운을 경험하기도 한다.

The Internet has brought wealth to some who created so-called “dot com” empires. But the get-rich-quick impulse has also made many people vulnerable to predators. For instance, e-mails still circulate in which the senders promise recipients huge rewards simply for “helping” them to complete large international financial transactions. The basic rule is, if someone approaches you with a get-rich-quick scheme, in all likelihood that individual will be the only one to gain rapid wealth – and at your expense.
인터넷은 소위 “닷 컴”제국을 창건한 사람들에게 부를 가져다 주었다. 그러나 그 벼락부자 충동은 또한 많은 사람들이 포식자에 대하여 취약하도록 만들었다. 예를 들면 이메일의 발신자가 수신자에게 대규모 국제 금융거래가 성립되도록 “도와주기”만 하면 어마어마한 보상을 약속한다는 이메일이 아직도 떠돌고 있다. 기본적인 규칙은 누군가 벼락부자 계획을 가지고 당신에게 접근하면 십중팔구 그 사람만 유일하게 횡재를 하게 되고 – 당신이 그 대가를 치르게 된다는 것이다.

It seems the lure of instant wealth is as old as humankind. Perhaps that is why the timeless book of Proverbs offers clear and stern warnings about the seduction of sudden wealth, teaching that the best path to material gain is consistent, focused hard work, not games of chance or speculative ventures. Consider the following:
횡재에 대한 유혹은 인류의 역사만큼이나 오래 된 것 같다. 아마도 그것이 시간을 초월한 잠언서가 횡재의 유혹에 대하여 분명하고 엄격한 경고를 하고 물질을 취득하는 최상의 길은 부단히, 집중하여 열심히 일하는 것이고,요행을 바라는 게임이나 투기적인 사업을 하는 것이 아니라고 하는 이유일 것이다.
다음을 생각하여 보라:

Gain riches by working diligently. If you want to prosper financially and materially, don’t rely on luck or good fortune. Plan carefully, establish a reasonable course of action, and pursue it. You reap what you sow. In fact, the rule of nature is that you reap more than you sow – if you plant a kernel of grain, the product is many kernels of grain. “Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provision in summer and gathers its food at harvest…. A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest – and poverty will come on you like a bandit and scarcity like an armed man” (Proverbs 6:6-11; also Proverbs 24:30-34).
부지런히 일함으로써 부를 취득하라. 재정적으로나 물질적으로 번창하기를 원하면 행운에 의지하지 말라. 조심성 있게 계획을 하고 합리적인 행동지침을 수립하여 그것을 따르라. 뿌린 대로 거둘 것이다. 사실, 자연의 법칙은 뿌린 것보다 더 많이 거둔다는 것이다. 즉, 곡식 한 알을 심으면 많은 곡식의 소출이 있을 것이다. “게으른 자여 개미에게 가서 그 하는 것을 보고 지혜를 얻으라 개미는 두령도 없고 간역자도 없고 주권자도 없으되 먹을 것을 여름 동안에 예비하여 추수 때에 양식을 모으느니라…, 좀 더 자자 좀 더 졸자 손을 모으고 좀 더 눕자 하면 네 빈궁이 강도 같이 오며 네 곤핍이 군사 같이 이르리라“ (잠언 6:6-11; 또한 잠언 24:30-34).

Hard labor rewards; idle dreams disappoint. It is sometimes entertaining to imagine what we could do with instant wealth, but to count on something like that happening to us is foolish. It is like waiting on a street corner for a bus when the transportation company has discontinued service to that area. The best way to gain the material resources we need is to utilize our personal gifts, skills and experience, applying them through hard work to accomplish specific goals. “He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment” (Proverbs 12:11, also Proverbs 28:19).
열심히 일하면 보상을 받고 게으른 꿈은 실망을 가져온다. 갑자기 얻은 재물로 무엇을 할 것인지 상상하는 것이 때로는 즐겁지만 그와 같은 일이 우리에게 일어날 것이라고 기대하는 것은 어리석다. 그것은 마치 길 모퉁이에서 버스를 기다리는데 운수회사가 그 지역에 운행을 중단한 버스를 기다리는 것과 같다. 우리가 필요한 물질적인 자원을 취득하는 최상의 길은 우리의 개인적인 재능, 기술과 경험을 이용하고, 열심히 일하는 가운데 그것들을 특정 목표를 달성하는데 적용하는 것이다. “자기의 토지를 경작하는 자는 먹을 것이 많거니와 방탕한 것을 따르는 자는 지혜가 없느니라“ (잠언 12:11, 또한 잠언 28:19).

Talk is cheap; diligent work is costly – but worth the investment. Anyone can speak boldly about their intentions. The test is whether we can put those intentions into action. Wishing and hoping, dreaming and scheming may succeed in passing time, but they accomplish nothing. In the end, we will still be wondering why we have not achieved or attained what we had hoped. Hard work yields not only material riches, but also the riches of enjoying a job well-done. “All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty” (Proverbs 14:23).
말하는 것은 값싸고, 부지런히 일하는 것은 값비싸지만 투자할 가치가 있다. 누구든지 자신의 의도하는 일에 관하여 담대하게 말할 수 있다. 그 의도한 것을 실행에 옮길 수 있는지 여부는 시험해 볼 일이다. 바라는 일과 희망하는 일, 꿈꾸는 일과 계획을 세우는 일은 시간을 보내는 데는 제격이지만 그것들은 아무 것도 이룰 수 없다. 마지막에 가서 우리는 여전히 우리가 희망하는 것을 왜 이루거나 취득하지 못하였는지 의아해 할 것이다. 열심히 일함으로써 물질적인 부 뿐만 아니라 잘 된 일을 즐기는 부를 만들어낸다. “모든 수고에는 이익이 있어도 입술의 말은 궁핍을 이룰 뿐이니라“ (잠언 14:23).
