공짜 점심과 크리스마스 선물

There is an old saying in the business and professional world: “There is no such thing as a free lunch.” But you might protest, “I get free lunches once in awhile. In fact, last week a sales representative for a company we do a lot of business with took me to lunch.” That proves the point – you might have had an enjoyable conversation over a tasty meal, but the objective no doubt was to continue to cultivate a strong relationship with you and your company or provide an opportunity to tell about a new product or service.
사업과 전문직 세계에 “공짜 점심 같은 것은 없다.”고 하는 속담이 있다. 그러나 당신은 “나는 가끔 공짜 점심을 얻어 먹는다. 사실 지난 주에 우리와 거래가 많은 한 회사의 영업사원이 나에게 점심식사를 대접하였다.”라고 이의를  제기할 것입니다. 거기에 속담의 요점이 있다. 즉, 당신은 맛있는 음식을 먹으며 대화를 즐겼을지 모르지만 그 목적은 틀림 없이 당신과 당신 회사와의 긴밀한 관계를 계속적으로 증진시켜 나가거나 혹은 새로운 제품이나 서비스에 관하여 이야기할 기회를 제공하기 위한 것이다.

Or you may get a “free lunch” at work, during which important business is discussed. Your company is providing food in exchange for your usual allotment of free time during the lunch hour. So again, the meal is not exactly “free.” The food costs you nothing, but in return you have an employee obligation to fulfill.
혹은 일하면서 “공짜 점심”을 얻어 먹을 수도 있는데 그 때 중요한 사업에 대하여 상담을 한다. 회사는 당신이 보통 점심 여가시간을 할애하는 대가로 음식을 제공한다. 이 때도 역시 식사는 엄밀하게 “공짜”가 아니다. 음식은 공짜지만 그 대가로 당신에게는 직원으로서의 의무가 따른다.

I raise this subject because within the next week, many of us will celebrate the annual Christmas holiday. Christmas observances and traditions may look different from one nation and culture to another, but in most cases the celebration involves the giving of gifts. This is as it should be, since Christmas derives its name from Jesus Christ, whom the Bible describes as the greater Giver of all time.
내가 이 주제를 다루는 이유는 다음 주중에 우리 많은 사람들이 연례적인 크리스마스 축제를 갖기 때문이다. 크리스마스를 지키는 일과 그 전통은 국가와 문화에 따라 다른 모양일지 모르지만 대개의 경우 경축하는 일 중에는  선물을 주는 일이 들어있다. 그것은 마땅히 그래야만 하는데 크리스마스는 그 이름이 예수 그리스도에서 유래하였고 성경은 그 분을 주는 자 중에서 역사상 가장 위대한 자라고 묘사하기 때문이다.

John 3:16 tells us, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” Elsewhere it also says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Romans 6:23). Another translation of this verse terms it the “free gift of God.” This is because the gift of forgiveness and eternal life is extended freely to all who will receive it, unconditionally. However, for Jesus, the provision of this gift was anything but free.
요한복음 3:16은 우리에게 “ 하나님이 세상을 이처럼 사랑하사 독생자를 주셨으니 이는 저를 믿는 자마다 멸망치 않고 영생을 얻게 하려 함이니라.”고 말해주고 있다. 다른 곳에서 또한 성경은, “죄의 삯은 사망이요 하나님의 은사는 그리스도 우리 주 안에 있는 영생이니라” (로마서 6:23)고 말해주고 있다. 이 구절을 다른 번역판은 “하나님이 값 없이 주는 선물”이라고 말한다. 이것은 용서와 영생의 선물은 받아들이는 자들에게 조건 없이 공짜로 주어지기 때문이다. 하지만 예수님께는 이 선물을 주는 것이 공짜일 수가 없다.

In fact, for Jesus the cost was unbelievably high – beyond our full comprehension. Let’s look briefly at what this cost actually amounted to:
사실 예수님께 그 대가는 믿어지지 않을 만큼 – 우리의 모든 이해력을 넘어서는 – 비싼 것이다. 그 대가가 실제로 얼마 만큼인지 간략하게 살펴보자:

God condescended to become a man. Imagine the ruler of a nation assuming the role of the poorest citizen in that country. In taking on human in the person of Jesus Christ, God did this – and more – lowering Himself from His heavenly station to live among His created people as teacher, example and ultimately, Savior. “The Word (Jesus Christ) became flesh and made his dwelling among us” (John 1:14).
하나님은 자신을 낮추어 인간이 되셨다. 한 국가의 통치자가 그 나라에서 가장 가난한 자의 역할을 떠맡았다고 상상하여 보라. 예수 그리스도께서 인간의 몸을 입고 오심으로 그렇게 행하셨고 – 그리고 더 나아가 – 자기 자신을 하늘 보좌에서 끌어내려 자신이 창조하신 사람들 가운데 살면서 선생이 되고, 모범이 되고 그리고 궁극적으로 구세주가 되었다. “말씀이 육신이 되어 우리 가운데 거하시매“ (요한복음 1:14).

Jesus bore the cost of our guilt. He committed no sins, but on the cross Jesus bore the weight of the sins of all mankind so that we could receive God’s forgiveness and cleansing. “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
예수께서 우리 죄의 짐을 지셨다. 그 분은 죄를 짓지 않았으나 십자가에서 예수는 모든 인류의 죄 짐을 지심으로 우리가 하나님의 용서와 씻으심을 받을 수 있도록 하였다. “하나님이 죄를 알지도 못하신 자로 우리를 대신하여 죄를 삼으신 것은 우리로 하여금 저의 안에서 하나님의 의가 되게 하려 하심이니라“ (고린도후서 5:21).

He died in our place. Jesus willingly went to the cross to serve the death penalty on our behalf. Even though our failure to live up to God’s perfect standards doomed us to “death row,” Jesus essentially said to each of us, “I will die in your place!” “But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).
그분은 우리를 대신하여 죽으셨다. 예수께서는 기꺼이 십자가로 가셔서 우리 대신 죽음의 형벌을 받으셨다. 우리가 하나님의 완전한 기준에 맞춰 살지 못하여 “죽음의 대열”에 설 운명이지만, 예수님은 우리 각자에게 “너희를 대신하여 내가 죽을 것이다!”라고 아주 중요한 말씀을 하셨다. “우리가 아직 죄인 되었을 때 그리스도께서 우리를 위하여 죽으심으로 하나님께서 우리에게 대한 자기의 사랑을 확증하셨느니라” (로마서 5:8).

So what should be our response? As we celebrate Christmas and at least in some manner remember the Christ of Christmas, what does Jesus ask of us? We find the answer in John 1:12, which again refers to His wondrous gift – “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God.” If you have not already done so, will you receive this greatest of all Christmas gifts today?
그러면 우리의 반응은 어떠하여야 할까? 우리가 크리스마스를 경축하고 최소한 어떠한 방식으로든 크리스마스의 그리스도를 기억할 때, 예수께서는 우리에게 무엇을 요구하실까? 우리는 그 답을 요한복음 1:12에서 발견하는데, 또다시 그 분의 놀라운 선물에 대하여 말해준다 – “영접하는 자 곧 그 이름을 믿는 자들에게는 하나님의 자녀가 되는 권세를 주셨으니.” 당신이 아직 그렇게 하지 않았다면, 오늘 모든 크리스마스 선물 중에서 가장 위대한 선물을 받으시렵니까?
