힘이 없을 때 어떻게 해야 하나?

How do you react to situations when you suddenly discover you do not have any power? By “power,” in this instance I am not referring to authority or influence that we might desire to exert in the workplace, although that is an interesting topic in itself. I am referring to the power or energy necessary to accomplish something that must be done.
갑자기 아무런 힘이 없다는 것을 알게 되었을 때 어떻게 대응합니까? “힘”이라고 하면 그것 자체는 흥미로운 이야기 거리이지만 이러한 경우 직장에서 행사하기 싶은 권위나 영향력을 말하는 것이 아니다. 내가 말하는 것은 해야 할 무언가를 이루는데 필요한 동력이나 에너지를 가리킨다.

The other day I had just completed doing some volunteer work at a local hospital and felt tired and eager to return home. However, when I got into my car and turned the key in the ignition, nothing happened. Instead of hearing the rumble of the engine starting, or even a clicking sound, there was only silence. The battery was dead. Has that ever happened to you?
어느 날 나는 한 지방 병원에서 자원봉사 일을 마치고 나서 피곤하여 집으로 돌아오고 싶었다. 하지만 차에 올라 시동을 걸려고 키를 돌렸을 때 아무런 반응이 없었다. 엔진 시동이 걸릴 때 나는 소음이나 심지어 끼릭 소리마저 들리지 않고 정적만이 있을 뿐이었다. 배터리가 방전되었던 것이다. 그러한 일이 당신에게도 일어난 적이 있습니까?

Or have you ever experienced a time when suddenly, without warning, your house – or workplace – was without electricity? Or when something as simple as a battery-powered device – a flashlight, your cell phone or laptop computer, or an electric shaver – failed to turn on when you hit the start switch?
혹은 갑자기, 예고 없이, 당신의 집 – 혹은 직장 – 이 정전되었던 적이 있었습니까? 또는 배터리로 돌아가는 기구 – 손전등, 휴대폰이나 노트북, 또는 전기면도기 – 와 같이 단순한 어떤 것이 작동 스위치를 켰을 때 작동되지 않는 때가 있었습니까?

When instances like these occur, how do you feel? I typically feel frustrated or angry if I am in a hurry or have something urgent to do. I always feel powerless. It often seems these things happen when I don’t have the right-sized battery for the flashlight, have to do important work on my computer, or need to be somewhere. There is never a convenient time to be without power.

I also think of other times when I lack the power that I need: When I face a pressing deadline and feel I still have more work to do than can be accomplished in that timeframe. Or when I am asked to take on a project that will stretch the limits of my skills and experience, requiring me to reach beyond anything that I have achieved before. What do you do when you feel you lack the power to perform the task?

The Bible offers a unique perspective on this issue. God promises His people that along with their own power – talents, skills, expertise – He will give them the power they need to do the work He asks of them:
성경은 이 문제에 대하여 독특한 견해를 제시한다. 하나님은 자기 백성들에게 그들이 가진 힘 – 재능, 기술, 전문지식 – 과 더불어 하나님이 그들에게 하라고 요청하신 일을 하는데 필요한 힘을 주겠다고 약속하신다.

- We must be dependent on God for the resources we need. Many of us have been trained, even from childhood, to be self-sufficient and self-reliant. However, for follower of Christ’s job description demands dependence. “I am the vine; you are the branches….apart from me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).
- 우리는 필요한 자원을 구하기 위하여 하나님께 의지하여야 한다. 우리 많은 사람들이 어린 시절부터 자족하고 자립하도록 훈련을 받아왔다. 하지만, 예수님을 따르는 사람들의 업무내역에는 의지하는 일이 요구되고 있다. “나는 포도나무요 너희는 가지니…나를 떠나서는 너희가 아무 것도 할 수 없느니라” (요한복음 15:5).

- God will empower us to accomplish what needs to be done. In times of great stress and duress, we can find comfort in the reality that God will provide the power – the strength – to accomplish what lies ahead. “I can do everything through him who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).
- 하나님은 해야 할 일을 성취하도록 우리에게 힘을 주신다. 막중한 스트레스와 속박을 받고 있을 때에 우리는 하나님이 앞에 놓여 있는 일을 성취하도록 힘 – 능력 – 을 주신다는 사실에 위안을 얻을 수 있다. “내게 능력 주시는 자 안에서 내가 모든 일을 할 수 있느니라” (빌립보서 4:13).

- We should not rely on our own strength alone, but on the power of God. Followers of Christ recognize their own weaknesses and inadequacies, understanding the need to call on God for power to carry out His will. “…yet by God’s power we will live in him to serve you” (2 Corinthians 13:4).
- 우리는 자신의 능력에만 의지하지 말고 하나님의 힘에 의지하여야 한다. 그리스도를 따르는 자들은 자신의 연약함과 미비함을 인식하고 하나님의 뜻을 이루기 위하여 하나님께 힘을 달라고 요청하는 것이 필요함을 알아야 한다. “…우리도 여러분의 일에 대해 하나님의 능력으로 그분과 함께 살 것입니다” (고린도후서 13:4).

- God will provide us what we need – at the time we need it. God often does not provide resources in advance, but He does provide them when needed. “…do not worry beforehand about what to say. Just say whatever is given you at the time, for it is not you speaking, but the Holy Spirit” (Mark 13:11).
- 하나님은 우리가 필요한 것을 – 우리가 필요한 때에 공급할 것이다. 하나님은 대체로 먼저 자원을 공급하시지 않고 필요할 때 공급하신다. “…무슨 말을 할지 미리 걱정하지 말라. 때에 맞게 너희에게 주시는 말만 하면 된다. 말하는 분은 너희가 아니라 성령이시다” (마가복음 13:11).

1. When was the last time you had to deal with not having any power – a dead car battery, loss of electricity, or some other dilemma? How did you respond to that situation?
