Max DePree, the founder of a highly successful furniture company and author of several books about business, makes this observation: “Whether formally or informally, it’s important to recognize that practically everything we accomplish happens through teamwork. We are not on our own. Everyone works within a loop of social accountability – a family, a congregation, a business.”

Those of us who enjoy sports – whether as participants or spectators – appreciate the teamwork concept. But as DePree points out, accomplishing almost anything worthwhile requires a team framework. And nowhere is this truer than today’s business and professional world.

We tend to give special recognition to our company’s “key players” – the top-producing salesperson, the visionary and inspirational executive, or the manager of the most efficient department. But the truth is, even the individuals who labor unnoticed on the lowest levels of the personnel ladder are important to an organization’s success.
우리는 회사의 “핵심 주자들” – 실적이 가장 높은 영업사원, 비전과 영감을 가진 경영자, 또는 가장 효율적인 부서의 장 – 을 특별히 인정한다. 그러나 사실은, 인사체계의 가장 하위 계층에서 눈에 뜨이지 않게 일하는 사람들도 조직의 성공을 위하여 중요하다.

I’m reminded of this when I go to our local shopping mall, where I sometimes do my early morning power walking. While I and others are getting much-needed exercise striding through the mall’s corridors, the custodial crew wash windows, sweep floors, clean the restrooms and, once the stores open, respond quickly when shoppers create messes by spilling a drink or dropping a breakable item.
나에게 이러한 사실을 상기시켜 주는 것은 내가 우리 동네 쇼핑몰에 가서 가끔 새벽 걷기운동을 할 때이다. 나와 다른 사람들이 쇼핑몰의 복도를 큰 걸음으로 걸으면서 꼭 해야 할 운동을 하고 있는 동안 관리직원들은 창문을 닦고, 마루를 쓸고, 화장실 청소를 하다가 매장 문이 열리면, 손님들이 음료수를 엎질러 더럽히거나 깨지는 물건을 떨어뜨릴 때 신속하게 처리한다.

Every week consumers spend many thousands of dollars in this mall, but if it were not for the diligent efforts of this virtually unnoticed “housekeeping” staff, loyal shoppers would not be nearly as eager to return. They value a neat, clean, orderly mall as much as the variety of goods they can purchase at the shops.
매주 소비자들은 이 쇼핑몰에서 수천 불의 돈을 쓰지만 만약 이렇게 실제로는 눈에 뜨이지 않은 채 “매장 관리”를 하는 직원의 부지런한 손길이 없었다면 단골 손님들은 거의 다시 오고 싶어하지 않을 것이다. 그들은 매장에서 구매할 수 있는 상품의 다양성 못지 않게 말끔하고, 깨끗하고, 가지런히 정리된 쇼핑몰을 높이 평가한다.

Years ago, when I was a magazine editor, I always marveled when a new edition arrived from the printer. I never failed to shake my head in amazement, thinking, “The whole truly is greater than the sum of the parts.” Our magazine – as is the case for any publication – was the product of the unique talents and gifts of a number of people, each serving in different but equally vital roles.

Interestingly, the Bible makes some notable observations about the value of teamwork:
흥미롭게도 성경은 팀웍의 가치에 관하여 주목할 만한 견해를 피력한다:

The power of a team. Being part of a team can provide encouragement, strength and support. And the reality is that members of a team working together can accomplish much more than they could independently. “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work. If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!... Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-12)
팀의 위력. 팀의 일원이 됨으로써 격려와 힘과 지원을 받는다. 그리고 사실은 함께 일하는 팀의 구성원들이 혼자서 하는 것보다 더 많은 것을 성취할 수 있다. “하나보다 둘이 더 낫다. 둘이 함께 노력하면 더 좋은 결과를 얻기 때문이다. 넘어지게 되면 하나가 다른 하나를 일으켜 줄 수 있다. 그러나 혼자여서 넘어져도 일으켜 줄 사람이 없으면 얼마나 불쌍한가? --- 혼자서는 질 일도 둘이서는 당해 낼 수 있으니 세 겹 줄은 쉽게 끊어지지 않는다.” (전도서 4:9-12)
The productivity of a team. Whether it is competing in a game of tennis or working together on a major project under deadline pressure, our interactions with one another – creative friction – can enable each of us to function more effectively, improve our work habits, and become more productive. “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” (Proverbs 27:17).
팀의 생산성. 테니스 시합을 하거나 중요한 프로젝트를 위하여 마감시간에 쫓기면서 함께 일할 때, 우리 서로의 상호작용 – 창조적인 마찰 – 은 각 사람이 좀 더 효과적으로 기능을 발휘하고, 우리의 업무습관을 개선시켜주고, 그리고 좀 더 생산성을 높일 수 있도록 하여준다. “철이 철을 날카롭게 하듯 사람이 그 친구의 얼굴을 빛나게 한다.” (잠언 27:17).
The presence of a team. An unusual and very beneficial synergy results when a group of people work together, united by a common vision and mission. This “esprit de corps” can motivate, inspire and enable us to perform at higher levels than we have ever seen before. “When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority…and he sent them out to preach the kingdom of God and to heal the sick.... So they set out and went from village to village, preaching the gospel and healing people everywhere” (Luke 9:1-6).
팀의 존재. 비범하고 매우 유익한 시너지 효과가 사람들이 모여 공동의 비전과 사명감으로 연합하여 함께 일할 때 나타난다. 이 “단결심”이 동기부여를 하고, 고무시키고 또한 우리가 전에 보았던 것보다 더 높은 수준으로 일할 수 있게 하여준다. “예수께서는 열두 제자를 한 자리에 불러 모으시고 능력과 권세를 주셨습니다… 그리고 그들을 내보내시며 하나님 나라를 전파하고 병든 사람들을 고쳐 주라고 하셨습니다…제자들은 나가서 여러 마을들을 두루 다니며 곳곳에서 복음을 전파하며 사람들을 고쳐 주었습니다” (누가복음 9:1-6).
