At the age of 30, I surrendered my career to God and asked Him to show me what He wanted me to do. After getting an MBA and spending five years in consulting and sales, the time had come to trust God 100 percent instead of asking Him to join me in what I was doing.
서른 살 때 나는 나의 진로를 하나님께 맡기면서 그분께 내가 무슨 일을 하기를 원하시는지 물었다. MBA를 따고 컨설팅과 영업 일로 5년을 보낸 후 하나님이 내가 하는 일에 동참하여 달라고 요청하는 대신 하나님을 100% 신뢰하는 시기가 왔다.

Then God led me to Ronald Blue & Co. to become a financial planner. It was the clearest sense of direction I had experienced in my life. So clear, in fact, that I thought the greatest blessing was that I had found my life calling. It was a joy and a privilege each day to give clients financial counsel from a biblical perspective.
그러자 하나님은 나를 로날드 불루 앤 컴퍼니에 인도하시고 재무설계사가 되도록 하셨다. 그것은 나의 삶 중에 경험한 가장 분명한 의미의 명령이었다. 사실 너무 명확하여 나에게 최대의 축복은 내 인생의 소명을 발견한 것이라고 생각하였다. 매일 고객들에게 성경적 시각에서 재정에 관한 자문을 해주는 것은 기쁨이고 특권이었다.

Working with clients on financial and life stewardship caused me to ask myself the same questions I would often discuss with clients: How much is enough? What are your passions? My heart was stirred to revive a lifelong passion for playing the piano and writing songs. "Baby steps" of faith led to where God inspired me to compose instrumental melodies to help people slow down and experience His peace. The next year, I released my first CD and gave it to friends, clients and co-workers. As more people began to enjoy my music, two albums followed.

In the summer of 2004, I left Ronald Blue & Co. to become a full-time pianist and composer. The truly great blessing of my call to that firm, I discovered, was not that it was a life calling, but that I had learned God would speak to me and I could hear His voice if my heart was surrendered to Him. The improbability of my career shifting from money to music is a miracle and a mystery that has stretched our faith, but God has been faithful.

The principles of Sound Mind Investing were vital in giving my wife and me the financial ability to follow God's call. She and I worked before having children, lived within our means, and paid off all of our debts except our home mortgage. We made extra principal payments over time and were able to convert from a 30-year to a 15-year mortgage with the same payment. We maximized and diversified our retirement savings using recommendations for money market and mutual funds. God also challenged us to do more charitable giving during those years.

Below are four additional steps and Scripture passages that have had a powerful impact on our faith journey. I hope they inspire and encourage you to pursue your passions with a sound mind.

1. Invest. In 1999 I had a stirring in my heart that I was supposed to invest in a keyboard and computer to record some old songs I had written in high school. God's voice just would not go away on this, so I gathered information for six months, waited upon the Lord, and took action steps to obey and invest. Following this, God revealed a new idea to create solo piano from scripture to "bring peace to the soul." "Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart" (Psalm 37:4).
투자하라. 1999년에 나는 마음 속으로 자극을 받아 키보드와 컴퓨터에 투자하여 중고등학교 시절에 작곡한 옛 노래를 기록하기로 하였다. 하나님의 음성이 이것에서 멀어지지 않도록 나는 여섯 달 동안 정보를 수집하였고, 주님을 섬겼고, 순종하고 투자하기 위하여 단계적으로 실천하였다. 그 다음에 하나님은 “영혼에 평안을 주기” 위하여 성경으로부터 피아노 독주곡을 창작하도록 새로운 아이디어를 드러내주셨다. “여호와를 기뻐하십시오. 그러면 그분이 당신 마음의 소원을 이루어 주실 것입니다“ (시편 37:4).

2. Invigorate. What is it that invigorates you (that is, refreshes, revitalizes, stimulates, enlivens, energizes, rejuvenates, animates, strengthens you)? Make sure to integrate whatever "it" is into your life, even if this means just a few minutes each day or a few hours each week. Make the most of life right now where you are. "I run in the path of your commands, for you have set my heart free" (Psalm 119:32).

3. Invite. After you have prayerfully asked God to speak, waited upon Him, listened for His voice, obeyed what He says, and clarified the vision He has revealed to you, then you are ready to invite others to pray for you and even contribute to your cause. Ask God to help you seek to please Him and not men. "Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear" (Isaiah 65:24).
초대하라. 하나님께 기도로 말씀하여 주시도록 청하고, 그분을 섬기고, 그분의 음성에 귀 기우려 듣고, 그분이 말씀하신 것에 순종하고, 그분이 당신에게 보여준 비전을 분명히 밝히고 나면, 그제서야 당신은 다른 사람들을 초대하여 당신을 위하여 기도하고 당신의 주장에 따르게 할 준비가 된 것이다. 하나님께 사람이 아닌 당신을 기쁘게 하도록 도와달라고 청하라. “그들이 부르기 전에 내가 대답하고 그들이 아직 말하고 있을 때 내가 들어주겠다” (이사야 65:24).

4. Imitate. Imitate the faith of others who are surrendered to God and seeking His will in their life. Spend time with them and learn from them. Imitate Jesus' desire to please the Father. "So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?' Remember your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith" (Hebrews 13:6-7).
본받아라. 자신의 삶 가운데 하나님께 맡기고 그분의 의를 구하는 다른 사람들의 믿음을 본받아라. 그들과 시간을 함께 보내고 그들로부터 배워라. 하늘 아버지를 기쁘시게 하고자 하는 예수님의 소망을 본받아라. “그러므로 우리는 담대히 말합니다.’주는 나를 돕는 분이시니 나는 두려워하지 않을 것이. 사람이 나를 어찌 하겠는가?’ 하나님의 말씀을 여러분에게 전해 준 여러분의 지도자들을 기억하십시오. 그들이 산 삶의 결과를 살펴보고 그 믿음을 본받으십시오” (히브리서 13:6-7).
