In 2000 I read a powerful little book by Dr. Bruce Wilkinson, The Prayer of Jabez. It has had a great impact on the way I have prayed ever since. The book is based on two lines dedicated to a man named Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10, a man not mentioned elsewhere in the Bible. The second verse in the passage states, “If only You would bless me, extend my border, let Your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will not cause any pain."

Consisting of just over 60 words, the two-verse passage describes Jabez’s birth, his prayer, and God granting his request. Since reading the book, I often end my morning prayer-times with a customized version of the prayer that fits what I desire to convey to God every day. Here are the parts to my prayer:

"Lord, bless me beyond my expectations..." – I know that my expectations fall short of what God has planned for me. Certainly none of us know what lies ahead. God has blessed me over the years, but many of those blessings did not feel pleasant at the time since they took the form of trials and afflictions. With time, however, I was able to see how God was orchestrating events to strengthen me for what He had planned for me. I learned to trust Him in all things, and He certainly has never let me down.

“주님, 제가 바라는 것 이상으로 저를 축복하여 주세요…” – 나는 내가 바라는 것이 하나님께서 나를 위하여 계획하신 것에 미치지 못한다는 것을 안다. 분명히 우리 중에 어떤 사람도 앞으로 무슨 일이 일어나게 될지 알지 못한다. 하나님께서는 여러 해 동안 나를 축복해주셨지만, 그러나 그 축복 중에 대다수가 당시에는 기쁘게 느껴지지 않았는데, 그것은 시련과 고난의 모습을 하고 있었기 때문이다. 하지만 시간이 지나면서 나는 하나님께서 나를 위하여 계획하신 일을 하도록 나에게 능력을 주시려고 모든 일을 전체적으로 주관하시는 것을 볼 수 있었다. 나는 모든 일에 대하여 그분을 신뢰하는 것을 배웠고, 그리고 그분은 결코 나를 실망시키지 않으셨다.

 

"Expand my borders – my area of influence – for your glory Lord..." – As I began praying I had no idea what God had planned. I believed this part of the prayer had nothing to do with my insurance career. Over time I concluded it had more to do with being influential in the lives of others, but at first saw this as being limited to my community. These days I see how he has taken some of my writings and carried them around the world through the Internet without any of my doing. And it has been all for His glory!

주님의 영광을 위하여 나의 지경 – 나의 영향권 – 을 넓혀주세요…” – 기도하기 시작하면서 나는 하나님께서 무슨 계획을 하셨는지 알지 못하였다. 나는 기도의 이 부분이 나의 보험 일과 아무런 상관이 없다고 믿었다. 시간이 지나면서 나는 그것이 다른 사람들의 삶에 영향을 주는 일과 더 많은 관련이 있다는 결론을 얻었지만, 그러나 처음에는 이것이 나의 지역사회에 국한되어 있음을 보았다. 요즘 나는 그분이 내가 아무 일도 하지 않았는데 나의 글 중에 몇을 골라서 어떻게 인터넷을 통하여 전 세계로 전달해주시는지를 보았다. 그리고 그것은 모두 그분의 영광을 위한 것이었다.

 

"Keep your hand on me constantly, Father ..." – For me, this is the most straightforward part of the prayer. God will never let me go, but I want Him to know I have no desire to leave Him. I need Him to take me through the depths of disappointment we all face with the uncertainty of life. He is my Strength, my Fortress, my Rock, and my Salvation.

“아버지, 끊임없이 저를 지켜주세요…” – 나에게 이것은 그 기도의 가장 직설적인 부분이다. 하나님은 결코 나를 떠나가게 내버려두시지 않겠지만, 그러나 나는 그분이 내가 그분을 떠나고 싶어하지 않는다는 것을 알기 원한다. 나는 우리 모두가 삶의 불확실성 가운데 직면하는 절망의 심연을 그분이 나와 함께 통과하시기를 원한다. 그분은 나의 요새, 나의 산성, 그리고 나의 구원이시다.

 

And keep evil from me so I may not cause pain." – I imagine Jabez prayed for God to keep him from evil so he would not cause pain – in the lives of others and his own life. Evil is all around us. Much of the evil in the world has been sugar-coated so it may not look or taste as bad. But Oswald Chambers reminds us God wants and deserves our best – nothing less. My desire is to give my Lord and Savior "my utmost for His highest," as Chambers termed it.

Without question, God has truly blessed me beyond my expectations. He has greatly expanded my borders (my area of influence) for His glory. I can attest that He has kept His hand in mine continually. And He constantly keeps me from the Evil one to prevent me from causing pain for others or myself.

의문의 여지 없이 하나님은 진정으로 내가 바라는 것 이상으로 나를 축복하여 주셨다. 그분은 자신의 영광을 위하여 나의 지경 (나의 영향권)을 크게 넓혀주셨다. 나는 그분이 계속적으로 나와 관계를 유지해주신다는 것을 증명할 수 있다. 그리고 그분은 다른 사람들이나 나 자신에게 고통을 주는 일이 없도록 나를 환난에서 벗어나게 하신다.

 

In a nutshell, He has answered my prayer and I am certain He will answer yours as well, if you only offer a simple, humble prayer as Jabez did. Ask and you will receive wonderful blessings beyond anything you could imagine, from God Almighty!
