‘대시 안에서’ 사는 것을 배우기

My friend Richard likes to talk about “living in the dash.” The “dash” he refers to is that little punctuation mark that appears on a tombstone, separating a person’s date of birth and the date of their death. Although very small, the dash essentially represents everything that has transpired in the individual’s life between those two dates.
내 친구 리처드는 “대시 안에서 사는 것”에 대하여 말하기를 좋아한다. 그가 말하는 “대시(-)”는 묘비에 나타나는 작은 구두점으로써 한 사람의 출생한 날과 사망한 날을 가른다. 매우 작지만, 그 대시는 본질적으로 그 사람의 일생 중 그 두 날자 사이에 발생한 모든 것을 나타낸다.

Imagine enlarging your own dash and being able to view everything that would ultimately comprise your entire life. Do you think you would be satisfied with what you saw?

Fortunately, as long as we continue to draw breath, we are also continuing to determine what events, actions, achievements and relationships our “dash” will include. For each of us today, the final chapter has not yet been written in our lives. We cannot change what already is past, but we can shape our present and determine the course we would like our future to take.

The question is how do we make the best use of what remains of that tiny dash that one day will symbolize the totality of our lives? How can we know whether we will be pleased with what it represents – our vocational pursuits, our relationships with family members and friends, our personal accomplishments, our values and priorities, even our leisure activities?
문제는 어느 날 우리 인생 전체를 상징하게 될 그 자그마한 대시의 나머지를 우리가 어떻게 최대한 이용하는가 이다. 어떻게 우리는 그것이 나타내는 것들 – 직업상 우리가 추구하는 것들, 가족과 친구들과 우리의 관계, 우리의 개인적인 성취, 우리의 가치와 우선순위, 우리의 여가활동까지도 – 을 기뻐하게 될지 알 수 있을까?

There are many ways of approaching these questions, but one I would recommend is to consult the Bible and consider its wisdom that has aided countless millions of people through the centuries. Here are just a few of the principles – just scratching the surface – of what it offers for “living in the dash”:
이러한 질문에 접근하는 방법은 많지만 내가 권하는 한 가지는 성경을 찾아보고 여러 세기에 걸쳐 헤아릴 수 없이 많은 사람들에게 도움을 준 성경의 지혜를 생각해보라는 것이다. 여기에 성경이 “대시 안에서 사는 것”에 대하여 제시하는 몇 가지 원칙들 – 겉만 훑어보는 정도지만 – 이 있다.

Live with a long-term perspective. Too often people consider only short-term benefits, whether in handling money, formulating business decisions or making personal choices. Having a long-term perspective means keeping the end in view, even when it remains beyond our sight. This helps us to endure hardships without compromising our personal values. “We live by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7).
장기적인 안목을 갖고 살아라. 사람들은 대부분 단기적인 이익만을 생각하는데, 돈을 취급하든, 사업상의 결정을 하든, 혹은 개인적인 선택을 하든 그러하다. 장기적인 안목을 갖는 것은 마지막을 염두에 두되 그것이 우리의 시야 너머에 있더라도 그렇게 하는 것을 의미한다. 이것은 우리가 개인적인 가치관에 대하여 타협함이 없이 고생을 견뎌내는데 도움을 준다. “우리는 믿음으로 행하고 보는 것으로 행하지 않습니다” (고린도후서 5:7).

Pursue excellence in whatever you do. Would it not be sad to look back on your life and realize that you never strived to do as well as you possibly could – in your work, in your relationships, even your hobbies? If you strive for excellence, to do your best, you will have far fewer regrets. “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might…” (Ecclesiastes 9:10).
무엇을 하든 탁월함을 추구하라. 인생을 되돌아 보면서 당신의 능력으로 할 수 있을 만큼 – 일에서, 관계에서, 취미에서도 – 하려고 노력해본 적이 없다는 것을 깨달으면 슬프지 않겠는가? 탁월함을 위하여, 최선을 다하기 위하여 노력하면 후회가 훨씬 줄어들 것이다. “무엇이든지 네 손으로 할 만한 일을 찾으면 온 힘을 다해 하여라…” (전도서 9:10).

Work wholeheartedly for the right reward. We all need some kind of motivation in our jobs, whether it is pay increases, personal recognition, promotions, or the sense of personal accomplishment. If we strive to satisfy the highest standard – that established by God – our reward will be even greater. “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not men, because you know that the Lord will reward everyone for whatever good he does…” (Ephesians 6:7-8).
정당한 대가를 받기 위하여 전심전력을 다하여 일하라. 우리 모두는 직업에서 어떤 종류의 동기부여가 필요한데, 그것은 급여인상이나, 개인적으로 인정을 받는 것이나, 진급이나, 혹은 개인적인 성취감이 될 수도 있다. 우리가 가장 높은 기준 – 하나님께서 설정한 – 을 충족시키려고 노력하면 우리에게 오는 대가는 더욱 클 것이다. “성실히 섬기되 주를 섬기듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 마십시오. 모든 사람이 무슨 선을 행하면 주께로부터 다시 이것을 받을 줄 알기 때문입니다…” (에베소서 6:7-8).

Seek to provide assistance for others. Business and professional people understand the importance of investments. But the greatest investment is made in people – whether materially, time, energy, wisdom, expertise, spiritually – to help them in their life’s journey. “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?” (1 John 3:16-17).
다른 사람들에게 도움을 줄려고 노력하라. 사업과 전문직에 종사하는 사람들은 투자의 중요성을 이해한다. 그러나 가장 위대한 투자는 사람에게 하는 것 – 물질적으로든, 시간, 정력, 지혜, 전문적 기술로든, 정신적으로든 – 으로써 그들의 인생 여정 가운데 돕는 것이다. “예수 그리스도께서는 우리를 위해 자기 목숨을 내놓으셨습니다. 그래서 우리가 사랑을 알게 됐습니다. 그러므로 우리도 형제들을 위해 우리 목숨을 내놓는 것이 마땅합니다. 누구든지 세상 재물을 갖고 있으면서 자기 형제나 자매의 궁핍함을 보고도 도와줄 마음이 없다면 어떻게 그 사람 안에 하나님의 사랑이 있다고 하겠습니까?” (요한일서 3:16-17).
