태도에 따라 달라진다

The current economic environment has reinforced for me the importance of having and maintaining the proper attitude. Business leaders have a couple of options they can follow in the midst of the economic turmoil. They can either choose to participate in and contribute to the recession, pulling back their growth efforts and downsizing, or they can choose to view the current downturn as an opportunity.

요즈음의 경제여건이 나에게 적절한 태도를 취하고 유지하는 것이 중요함을 강조하여 주었다. 비즈니스 리더들은 이 경제적 혼란 가운데 따를 수 있는 두어 가지 선택사항이 있다. 그들은 불황에 참여하고 이바지하는 쪽을 선택하여 성장을 위한 노력을 걷어 치우고 사업의 규모를 축소할 수도 있고, 혹은 지금의 침체 국면을 하나의 기회로 보는 쪽을 택할 수 있다.

 

The future of these leaders and their companies may improve or deteriorate depending upon how they respond, based on their attitudes and the approach they take. From my observation, the business leaders that seem to be weathering the storm the best are the ones who have set worry and anxiety aside, and instead have seized the opportunity to aggressively go after new business. In many cases, what has been lost is lost – but there remains much to be gained.

이 리더들과 그들 회사의 장래는 그들의 태도와 그들이 취하는 접근방식에 근거하여 어떻게 반응하느냐에 따라 개선될 수도 있고 나빠질 수도 있다. 내가 본 바로는 풍파를 가장 잘 헤쳐나가는 비즈니스 리더들은 걱정과 근심을 버리고, 그 대신에 새로운 사업을 좇아 공격적으로 나아갈 기회를 붙잡는다. 많은 경우에 이미 잃은 것은 잃은 것이지만 – 얻을 수 있는 것도 많이 남아있다.

 
In the New Testament of the Bible, Philippians 4:6-7 teaches, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

신약성서, 빌립보서 4:6-7은 “아무것도 염려하지 말고 오직 모든 일에 기도와 간구로 여러분이 구할 것을 하나님께 감사함으로 아뢰십시오. 그리하면 모든 생각을 뛰어넘는 하나님의 평강이 그리스도 예수 안에서 여러분의 마음과 생각을 지켜 주실 것입니다” 라고 가르쳐준다.

 

Obviously, when the stock market is doing its best to emulate a rollercoaster, and productivity and sales are on the decline, saying “Do not be anxious” and actually being able to succeed in setting aside anxiety are two different things. But the key in this passage is the focus: We are instructed not to be anxious – about anything – but instead to trust in God, directing to Him our prayers, concerns and requests.

분명히 주식시장은 롤러코스터를 최대한 흉내 내어 오르락내리락하고 있고, 생산성과 매출은 감소하고 있을 때, “염려하지 말라”고 말하는 것과 실제로 근심을 버릴 수 있는 것은 별개의 일이다. 그러나 이 구절의 골자는 다음에 초점이 맞춰져 있다. 우리는 – 어떤 일에 대하여 – 근심하지 말고 대신에 하나님을 신뢰하고 그분께 우리의 기도, 관심과 요청을 올려드리라는 명령을 받았다.

 

The key here is in believing and trusting that God is in control and has our best interests at heart. If you do not believe that, it will be hard to experience “the peace of God which transcends all understanding.” After all, we want to understand. We want to know how the Almighty will work things out for the good of His people, especially when external circumstances at times make that seem impossible.

여기에서 핵심은 하나님이 다스리시고 우리에게 가장 이로운 것을 마음에 두고 계시다는 것을 믿고 신뢰하는 것이다. 그것을 믿지 않으면 “모든 지각에 뛰어난 하나님의 평강”을 경험하는 것은 어렵게 될 것이다. 결국 우리는 알기를 원한다. 우리는 전능하신 하나님이 어떻게 자기 백성이 잘 되도록 일을 처리하시는지 알기 원하고, 특별히 외적 여건이 때때로 불가능하여 보일 때 더욱 그러하다.

 

But that, in a nutshell, is a summary of the walk of faith. Believing, even when things seem unbelievable. Trusting, even when everything else we have trusted in and relied on has failed us. A key principle in the Scriptures is that God is consistent and unfailing. In Hebrews 13:5, He promises, “Never will I leave you, never will I forsake you.”

그러나 그것이, 요컨대, 믿음의 행보를 요약한 것이다. 일들이 믿을 수 없어 보일 때에도 믿는 것. 우리가 신뢰하고 의지하던 다른 모든 것이 우리를 져버렸을 때 신뢰하는 것. 성경의 핵심적인 원리는, 하나님은 항상 변함이 없고 져버리지 않는다는 것이다. 히브리서 13:5에서 그분은 “내가 결코 너를 떠나지 않겠고 또 결코 버리지 않을 것이다” 라고 약속하신다.

 

The passage goes on to respond, “So we say with confidence, ‘The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me’” (Hebrews 13:6). Why? Because two verses later it declares, “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8). To me, these passages say that regardless of what situations we find ourselves in, no matter how uncertain or adverse the economic conditions may become, God is still there and poised to respond to meet us in our greatest times of need.

그 구절은 계속하여 대답하되, “그러므로 우리는 담대히 말합니다. “주는 나를 돕는 분이시니 나는 두려워하지 않을 것이다. 사람이 나를 어찌하겠는가?”” (히브리서 13:6). 왜? 두 구절 뒤에 “예수 그리스도께서는 어제나 오늘이나 영원토록 한결같으신 분입니다” (히브리서 13:8)라고 선포하기 때문이다. 나에게 이 구절들은 우리 자신이 어떠한 상황에 처해 있음을 우리가 알게 되든, 경제적인 조건이 아무리 불확실하거나 불리하더라도, 하나님은 여전히 거기 계시고 우리가 가장 절실하게 필요할 때 우리를 만나 응답하여 주실 준비가 되어 있다고 말씀해 주신다.

 

Back in Philippians, the apostle Paul underscores the importance of a proper attitude. After exhorting us not to be anxious, he writes, “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable – if anything is excellent or praiseworthy – think about such things” (Philippians 4:8).(ebrews (    

빌립보서로 돌아가서, 사도 바울은 적절한 태도의 중요성을 강조한다. 우리에게 근심하지 말라고 권고한 후에 그는 “마지막으로 형제들이여, 무엇이든지 진실하고 무엇이든지 경건하고 무엇이든지 의롭고 무엇이든지 거룩하고 무엇이든지 사랑할 만하고 무엇이든지 칭찬할 만한 일이 있다면 거기에 무슨 덕이나 무슨 기림이 있든지 이것들을 생각하십시오” (빌립보서 4:8) 라고 쓴다.

 

If peace has been hard for you to find at work lately, stop and consider Paul's wise words, as well as the promises we have in Hebrews. A positive attitude coupled with prayer, thanksgiving, and peace is much better than worry.

직장에서 요즘 평안을 찾기가 어려우면, 멈춰서 바울의 지혜로운 말과 히브리서에 있는 약속들을 생각하라. 기도, 감사함, 그리고 평안을 동반한 긍정적인 태도는 걱정보다 훨씬 낫다.

3.              Rick Boxx cites the biblical admonition to “be anxious for nothing.” Do you think that is realistic, or even possible, in times of great uncertainty or even chaos? Explain your answer.

4.           This discussion of having a proper attitude is not an endorsement of “positive thinking” that some motivational speakers and consultants endorse, but rather a call to trust in and rely on God and His providential care – even in the mundane situations we encounter at work. Discuss your reaction to such a suggestion.
