Back when the economy was strong and many people were prospering, it seemed many people would:
• Buy things they did not need – with money they did not have – to impress people they did not like.

Now that the economy is getting tougher and has become uncertain, I am seeing many of these same people:
 Keep trying to look good - while they are really hurting inside – to impress others who are silent, but hurting on the inside as well.

침묵을 지키지만 역시 내면적인 아픔을 겪고 있는 다른 사람들에게 인기를 얻기 위하여 실제로는 내면적으로 아픔을 당하면서 계속 좋은 상태인 것처럼 보이려고 한다.

I have several friends that have each lost huge sums of money in the past year, whether because of business reversals or failing investments. Because they are in various stages of spiritual maturity, I have observed that they each are handling the changes differently. At one extreme is a man who feels he is up to his eyeballs in horse manure, his financial difficulties beyond resolution in his view, and has openly talked about suicide.
나에게 여러 친구가 있는데 과거에 각각 사업의 극적인 변화 때문이든 투자의 실패 때문이든 거액의 돈을 잃게 되었다. 그들은 다양한 영적 성숙 단계에 있었으므로 나는 그들이 각각 그 변화를 상이하게 다루는 것을 보았다. 하나의 극단에 있는 사람은 그의 눈동자까지 말 분뇨가 차오른 듯한 재정적인 어려움들이 그가 보기에 해결할 수 없다고 느끼며, 자살에 대하여 공공연하게 말했다.
 
At the other extreme is another guy (who actually has lost even more money) choosing to take the opposite approach – that he is up to his eyeballs in fertilizer, on the verge of unprecedented opportunities for growth, and is extremely excited and optimistic about what God is going to do next.
다른 극단에 있는 또 한 친구 (사실상 더 많은 돈을 잃은 사람) 는 정반대로 접근하는데– 그의 눈동자까지 비료가 차올라  성장을 위한 전례 없는 기회에 직면했다고 생각하고 하나님이 다음에 무엇을 하시려고 하는지에 대하여 대단히 신이 나있고 낙관적인 사람이다. 
 
Years ago, when I was just deciding to get serious about my faith in God, a friend encouraged me to study and meditate on some very thought-provoking Bible verses. At the time I had no idea that I, too, would soon be facing moving from a position of substantial wealth to possible bankruptcy status. Several of those verses that kept me from drowning in the horse manure that I felt surrounded me – and instead helped me to grow in the fertilizer of adversity – are presented at the end of this Monday Manna.
몇 해전 내가 하나님을 향한 나의 믿음을 진지하게 가지려고 막 결심하고 있을 때, 한 친구가 생각을 깊이 하게 하는 성경구절 몇을 공부하고 묵상하도록 나를 격려하여 주었다.  그 당시에는 나 역시 대단히 부유한 상태에서 곧 파산에 이를지도 모르는 상태로 가는 때를 맞게 될 것이라고는 생각조차 하지 않았다. 그 구절들 중에 여러 구절이 나를 둘러싸고 있는 듯이 느꼈던 말 분뇨에 빠져 죽는 것을 막아주었고 – 그리고 대신에 역경의 비료 가운데 자라도록 도와 주었는데 – 그 구절들이 오늘 월요만나 말미에 소개된다.

If you, or a friend, are willing to talk about it, I would suggest that you approach a friend familiar with the Bible, its truths and promises, and learn what it has to say about your current struggles. Here is a sampling of the Scripture passages that have meant so much to me, especially in difficult times when there seemed to be no hope:

If you need wisdom, ask our generous God, and He will give it to you. He will not rebuke you for asking. But when you ask Him, be sure that your faith is in God alone. Do not waver, for a person with divided loyalty is as unsettled as a wave of the sea that is blown and tossed by the wind. Such people should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Their loyalty is divided between God and the world, and they are unstable in everything they do" (James 1:2 – 8).
“내 형제들이여, 여러 가지 시험을 만나거든 온전히 기쁘게 여기십시오. 여러분이 알다시피 여러분의 믿음의 연단은 인내를 이룹니다. 인내를 온전히 이루십시오. 그러면 여러분이 온전하고 성숙하게 돼 아무것에도 부족한 것이 없게 될 것입니다. 여러분 가운데 누구든지 지혜가 부족하면 모든 사람에게 후히 주시고 꾸짖지 않으시는 하나님께 구하십시오. 그러면 주실 것입니다. 오직 믿음으로 구하고 조금도 의심하지 마십시오. 의심하는 사람은 바람에 밀려 요동하는 바다 물결 같습니다. 그런 사람은 주께 무엇을 받을 것이라고 기대하지 마십시오. 그는 두 마음을 품은 사람으로 그의 모든 길은 정함이 없습니다” (야고보서 1:2-8).
 
"We can rejoice, too, when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they help us develop endurance.  And endurance develops strength of character, and character strengthens our confident hope of salvation. And this hope will not lead to disappointment. For we know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love" (Romans 5:3–5).
“뿐만 아니라 우리는 또한 환난 가운데서도 기뻐합니다. 이는 환난은 인내를, 인내는 연단을, 연단은 소망을 이루는 줄을 알기 때문입니다. 이 소망은 우리를 낙심시키지 않습니다. 하나님께서 우리에게 주신 성령으로 인해 그분의 사랑을 우리 마음에 부어 주셨기 때문입니다” (로마서 5:3-5).
 
"For I know the plans I have for you," says the Lord. "They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. In those days when you pray, I will listen. If you look for Me wholeheartedly, you will find Me"

“여호와의 말이다. 내가 너희를 위해 갖고 있는 계획들을 내가 알고 있으니 그것은 평안을 위한 계획이지 재앙을 위한 것이 아니며 너희에게 미래와 소망을 주기 위한 것이다. 그러면 너희가 나를 부르고 와서 내게 기도할 것이고 나는 너희 말을 들을 것이다. 너희가 너희의 온 마음으로 나를 찾을 때 너희가 나를 찾고 나를 발견할 것이다” (예레미야 29:11-13).

1. Prior to the economic collapse that has affected much of the world, were you one of those that bought things you did not need, with money you did not have, to impress people you did not like? If not, did you know someone who did act in that way? Why do you think people do that?
