당신이 하는 일이 하나님과 관계가 있습니까?

Years ago, Doug Sherman and William Hendricks wrote a thoughtful book called Your Work Matters to God. I imagine quite a few people glancing at the title might have thought to themselves, “You must be kidding!” After all, many of us envision a gap dividing the sacred from the mundane that seems like a chasm far too broad to cross. Or to borrow an adage, “Never the twain shall meet.”

But is that really true? Are the spiritual and the material necessarily and mutually exclusive? Does what occurs in the executive suite or the office cubicle elude the attention or concern of the Almighty?
그러나 그것은 정말 맞는 말일까? 영적인 것과 물질적인 것은 반드시 서로 배타적일까? 중역실이나 작은 사무실에서 일어나는 일이 전능하신 하나님의 주의나 관심에서 벗어나는 것일까?

Recently I read an entry in a book by Andrew Murray, a South African who died nearly about 90 years ago. Despite the passage of time, I believe his observation about the workplace remains as true today as it was the day he wrote it. Murray stated:
최근에 나는 90여 년 전에 작고한 남아연방 사람, 앤드류 머레이가 쓴 책 속의 한 구절을 읽었다. 시간이 경과하였음에도 불구하고 직장에 대한 그의 견해는 그가 글을 썼던 때와 마찬가지로 오늘날에도 들어맞는다고 나는 믿는다. 머레이는 다음과 같이 썼다:

“Some people think God will keep them in spiritual things but not in temporal things. But when God sends you to work in the world, He does not say, ‘I must leave now, while you go and earn your livelihood.’ Rather, God says, ‘My child, there is no work you are to do, no business in which you are engaged, but that I, your Father, will not be with you in my keeping power.’ The greater part of many people’s lives is spent amid the temptations and distractions of business; but God will care for you there. The keeping of God includes your whole life.”
“어떤 사람들은 하나님이 그들을 일시적인 일들이 아닌 영적인 일들을 하도록 붙잡아 둘 것이라고 생각한다. 그러나 하나님이 당신을 일하도록 세상에 보낼 때, 그분은 “네가 가서 생계를 꾸려나가는 동안 나는 지금 떠나 있겠다.’라고 말씀하시지 않는다. 오히려 하나님은 ‘얘야, 네가 하는 어떠한 일이나 네가 운영하는 어떠한 사업에도 너의 아버지인 내가 너와 함께 하여 나의 힘을 실어주지 않는 일은 없을 거야’라고 말씀하신다. 많은 사람들은 삶의 대부분을 사업으로 인한 유혹과 산만함 가운데 보내게 되겠으나 하나님은 거기에서 당신을 돌볼 것이다. 하나님의 지켜주심은 당신의 삶 전체를 다 포함한다.”

The fact is that many of us spend more time on the job than we do anywhere else, including our homes. We devote 40, 50, 60 hours or more to performing various functions and responsibilities for which we receive compensation. We might not conduct business using spiritual terminology or religious symbolism, but why should we therefore conclude that God would be disinterested in our careers or professions?

In actuality, the Bible has much to say about work, starting in the opening chapter of its first book, Genesis: “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it…. I will give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food’” (Genesis 1:26-30).

In Genesis 3, after Adam’s disobedience, God declared a curse on the ground, making work difficult. Yet labor retained its inherent sanctity as an ordained, divine calling. While human tradition has sometimes conveyed a different view, in the Bible there is no hierarchy, no ranking of jobs that would indicate that so-called “secular” work is any less prized in God’s eyes than work performed in a church or mission field. Here are several declarations about work we find in the Scriptures, assuring us that it is a noble undertaking, a godly privilege and pursuit:
창세기 3장에서, 아담의 불순종 이후 하나님은 땅 위에 저주를 선포하시고 일을 힘들게 만드셨다. 하지만 노동은 정해진 하나님의 소명으로서 고유한 신성을 지니고 있다. 인간의 전통은 때때로 다른 견해를 전해주지만 성경에서는 직업에 어떠한 계급제도나 어떠한 계층도 없고 이른바 “세속적”인 일이 교회나 선교 분야에서 수행한 일보다 하나님 보시기에 상급이 덜 한 것은 아니다. 여기에 우리가 일에 관하여 성경에서 찾아볼 수 있는 몇 가지 선언의 말씀들이 있는데 그것은 고귀한 기업이고 신성한 특권이며 추구하는 대상이다:

• The value of work. “A man can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in his work. This too, I see, is from God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?” (Ecclesiastes 2:24-25).
• The motivation of work. “The laborer’s appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on” (Proverbs 16:26).
• The reward of work. “He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment” (Proverbs 12:11).
• The objective of work. “And whatever you do, whether in word of deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him…. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” (Colossians 3:17, 23).
일의 가치. “먹고 마시고 하는 일이 잘되는 것보다 사람에게 더 좋은 것이 무엇이겠는가? 그런데 내가 보니 이것 또한 하나님의 손에 달려 있다. 나보다 먹고 즐기는 일에 나은 사람이 어디 있을까?” (전도서 2:24-25).
일을 위한 동기부여. “사람이 자신을 위해 일하는 것은 그 굶주린 입이 요구하기 때문이다” (잠언 16:26).
일에 대한 보상. “자기 땅을 일구는 사람은 먹을 것이 넉넉하지만 헛된 것을 좇는 사람은 지각이 없다” (잠언 12:11).
일의 목적. “그리고 말이든 일이든 무엇을 하든지 그 모든 것을 주 예수의 이름으로 하고 그분을 통해 하나님 아버지께 감사하십시오 … 무슨 일을 하든지 사람에게 하듯 하지 말고 주께 하듯 마음을 다해 하십시오” (골로새서 3:17,23).
