무엇을 – 혹은 누구를 – 믿을까?

We are living in challenging, uncertain times that could shatter the confidence of even the greatest optimist. Stalwart corporate giants are staggering; some are collapsing altogether. The stock markets, which many experts use to gauge global economies, have fluctuated wildly, plummeting from record highs. Entire industries teeter on the brink of disaster. once-secure jobs hang in jeopardy, while ranks of the unemployed multiply.

우리는 가장 느긋한 낙천주의자의 믿음마저 산산조각을 내는 도전과 불확실의 시대에 살고 있다. 건실한 거대 기업들이 비틀거리고 어떤 기업들은 다 함께 붕괴되고 있다. 증권시장은 많은 전문가들이 세계경제를 측정하는데 이용되고 있는데, 등락이 극심하여 기록적인 상승을 하였다가 곤두박질치기도 한다. 모든 산업에 재앙이 다가오고 있다. 한 때 안전하던 일자리가 위협을 받고 있고 실업자의 계층이 증가하고 있다.

 

It is enough to cause us to question what we have been trusting in. When multi-billion-dollar mega-corporations release dismal financial reports and issue dire forecasts for the future, investors know they cannot trust in them. When government leaders and “experts” struggle to explain wild, unexplainable shifts in economic tides, we know we cannot trust in them. When employers announce drastic cutbacks and layoffs, even dedicated workers know they cannot trust in them. The news media bombard us with information, often biased, distorted or exaggerated, and much of it contradictory. So we know we cannot trust in them.

그것은 우리가 신뢰해 온 것들에 대하여 의문을 불러 일으키기에 충분하다. 수십억 달라 자산의 대규모 기업들이 침울한 재무보고서를 제출하고 미래에 대하여 불길한 예측을 할 때 투자자들은 그들을 신뢰할 수 없다는 것을 안다. 정부 지도자들과 “전문가들”이 제멋대로이고 설명할 수 조차 없는 경제 흐름의 변화에 대하여 설명하려고 애쓰고 있을 때 우리는 그들을 신뢰할 수 없다는 것을 안다. 고용주들이 대폭적인 임금인하와 해고에 대하여 발표할 때 헌신적인 근로자마저도 그들을 믿을 수 없다는 것을 안다. 뉴스 매체들은 우리에게 종종 편향적이거나 왜곡되거나 과장된, 그리고 많은 부분이 모순된 정보의 폭격을 가한다. 따라서 우리는 그것들을 신뢰할 수 없다는 것을 안다.

 

Then in what – or in whom – can we trust? We may overflow with self-confidence and resourcefulness, but if we are honest, we acknowledge that we have our own limitations. There is much beyond our control. So we cannot even always trust in ourselves.

그렇다면 우리는 무엇을 – 혹은 누구를 – 믿을 수 있을까? 우리는 자신감과 기략이 넘칠 수도 있지만 솔직히 말하자면 우리는 스스로 한계가 있음을 인정한다. 우리의 통제를 벗어나는 것들이 많이 있다. 그러므로 우리는 우리 자신조차도 항상 믿을 수 없다.

 

Is there nothing, or no one, worthy of our complete and unqualified trust?

우리가 완전히 그리고 자격의 제한 없이 믿을 만한 것은 아무 것도, 혹은 아무도 없을까?

 

My own experience has shown me that there is only one source of trust that we can rely on implicitly, without wavering. We discover that source in what I consider the greatest book on business ever written – the Bible. Here is just a sampling of what the Old Testament book of Proverbs says about where we should direct our trust:

내 자신의 경험에 의하여 절대적으로 흔들림 없이 신뢰할 수 있는 유일한 근원이 있음을 알게 되었다. 우리는 그 근원을 내가 생각하기에 일찍이 사업에 대하여 쓴 책 중에서 가장 위대한 책 – 성경에서 발견한다.  여기에 구약성서 잠언에 우리가 우리의 믿음을 어디로 향하여야 하는지 말씀하신 것을 모아 보았다.

 

Trust in what we cannot understand. We often find ourselves in situations that defy comprehension, causing us to wonder how they can ever be worked out satisfactorily. But if we trust in a caring, all-knowing God who is actively involved in our lives, we can have the assurance that He is doing even more than we could ever hope or imagine. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him and he will make your paths straight” (Proverbs 3:5-6).

우리가 이해할 수 없는 것에 대한 신뢰. 우리는 종종 이해할 수 없는 상황에 우리 자신이 처해 있어서 어떻게 그것들을 만족스럽게 처리할 수 있을지 의아하게 생각한다. 그러나 우리가 우리의 삶에 적극적으로 개입하셔서 돌보시고 모든 것을 아시는 하나님을 신뢰하면 그분이 우리가 소망하거나 상상하는 것 이상으로 해 주신다는 확신을 가질 수 있다. “네 마음을 다해 여호와를 믿고 네 지식을 의지하지 마라. 네가 하는 모든 일에서 그분을 인정하여라. 그러면 그분이 네 갈 길을 알려 줄 것이다” (잠언 3:5-6).

 

Trust in proven, time-tested principles. Some regard the Bible as archaic and irrelevant, but those willing to give it an honest look find its truths as fresh and relevant as today’s news reports. The challenge is to learn these principles and discover how to apply them in our everyday circumstances. “So that your trust may be in the Lord, I teach you today, even you” (Proverbs 22:19).

증명이 되고 오랜 세월 시험을 거친 원칙들에 대한 신뢰. 어떤 사람들은 성경이 진부하고 관련성이 없다고 보지만 솔직한 눈으로 성경을 보기 원하는 사람들은 그 진리가 신선하고 오늘날의 뉴스 보도와 같이 관련성이 있음을 발견한다. 문제는 이러한 원칙들을 배워서 우리가 매일 처하는 환경에 적용하는 방법을 발견하는 것이다. “이는 네가 여호와를 의뢰하며 살도록 내가 오늘 네게 가르쳐 주는 것이다” (잠언 22:19)>

 

Trust in matters beyond our control. In many recent events, greed has contributed substantially to the demise of many companies. Executives have attempted to manipulate established economic practices and systems, to the detriment of millions of people. Relying on God, however, removes the need to take matters into our own hands. “A greedy man stirs up dissension, but he who trusts in the Lord will prosper” (Proverbs 28:25).

우리의 통제를 벗어나는 일들에 대한 신뢰. 최근 사건들 중에 많은 회사들을 망하게 하는데 탐욕이 큰 구실을 하였다. 경영자들은 기존 경제 관행과 제도를 교묘하게 다루려고 하였으나 수백만의 사람들이 손해를 입었다. 그러나 하나님께 의지하면 문제들을 우리 손에 넣을 필요가 없게 해준다. “마음이 교만한 사람은 분쟁을 일으키지만 여호와를 의지하는 사람은 삶이 윤택해진다” (잠언 28:25).

 

Trust in the one who will never disappoint. Our friends and cherished advisors, we know from experience, sometimes let us down, even in spite of their best intentions. They are, after all, “only human.” But we discover that when we place our trust in God, He alone will never fail us. His promises always hold true. “Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the Lord is kept safe” (Proverbs 29:25).

결코 실망시키지 않을 분에 대한 신뢰. 우리의 친구들과 사랑하는 조언자들은 우리가 경험으로 아는 바와 같이 그들의 가장 좋은 의도에도 불구하고 때때로 우리를 실망하게 한다. 그들은 결국 “인간일 뿐”이다. 그러나 우리는 하나님을 신뢰할 때 그분만이 우리를 져버리지 않는다는 것을 발견한다. 그분의 약속은 항상 진실하다. “사람을 두려워하면 덫에 걸리지만 여호와를 의지하는 사람은 누구나 안전하다” (잠언 29:25).
