“I couldn’t help it!” “The devil made me do it.” “The temptation was too great.”
“어쩔 수 없었다!” “악마가 그렇게 시켰다.” “유혹이 너무 컸다.”

Have you heard – or even used – excuses like these to justify bad decisions and poor behavior? We probably all have. Someone I know likes to say, “I can resist anything but temptation.” Even though we know what we should do – or should not do – often we do the opposite. one word for this, a term that many people dislike, is “sin.” Sin can be defined as “missing the mark”; knowing what is right – and choosing what is wrong.
좋지 않은 결정이나 잘못 된 행위를 정당화하려고 이와 같은 변명을 하는 것을 듣거나 해 본 적이 있습니까? 우리들은 아마 모두 그렇게 해본 적이 있을 것이다. 내가 아는 어떤 사람은, “나는 유혹 말고는 무엇이든 대항할 수 있다.”라고 즐겨 말한다. 우리가 어떻게 하여야 하는지 – 혹은 하지 말아야 하는지 – 를 알지라도 우리는 정반대로 행한다. 이에 관한 하나의 말, 많은 사람들이 싫어하는 용어는 “죄”이다. 죄는 “표적을 놓치는 것”이라고 정의할 수 있으며, 무엇이 옳은지 알면서 잘못 된 것을 선택하는 것이다.

Why is this? There are many reasons, but one is the reality that every day we are bombarded by temptations. In business we are tempted to take shortcuts or use deceptive means for achieving our goals. We may exaggerate the quality or capabilities of a product we are trying to sell, or overstate the capacity of our company to perform specific services a customer requires. People yield to temptation in their pursuit of promotions. Expense accounts can present unique temptations of their own. And we all can recall highly publicized corporate ethical scandals.
왜 그럴까? 이유가 많지만 그 하나는 우리가 매일 유혹의 폭격을 당하고 있다는 사실이다. 사업을 하면서 우리는 지름길을 택하거나 목표를 달성하기 위하여 기만적인 수단을 사용하고 싶은 유혹을 받는다. 우리는 우리가 팔려고 하는 제품의 질이나 성능을 과장하거나, 혹은 우리 회사가 고객이 요구하는 특정 서비스를 이행하는 능력을 부풀려 말할지도 모른다. 사람들은 진급을 하기 위하여 유혹에 굴복한다. 비용 계정은 그것 자체가 독특한 유혹을 제공한다. 그리고 우리 모두는 널리 알려진 기업비리를 기억한다.

In our personal lives we also confront multiple temptations – to express anger inappropriately; to abuse others verbally or physically; to compromise our marriage vows by engaging in infidelities or entertaining immoral thoughts; to eat or drink too much; to cheat in a “friendly” game of cards or conveniently forget a few strokes while playing golf; to violate the speed limit because we are running late for an appointment. The list could go on.
우리는 개인적인 삶 가운데 또한 여러 가지 유혹에 처하는데 – 분노를 부적절하게 표출하고; 다른 사람들을 말이나 신체적으로 학대하고; 부정한 짓을 하거나 부도덕한 생각에 빠짐으로써 우리의 결혼 서약을 더럽히고; 과식하거나 과음하고; “정다운” 카드 게임에서 속이거나 혹은 골프를 칠 때 편리하게 몇 타를 잊어버리기도 하고; 약속시간에 늦어 달려가면서 제한속도를 위반하는 것 등이다. 그 밖에도 여러 가지가 있다.

Temptation itself is not wrong – in the Bible we are told that even Jesus “has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet was without sin” (Hebrews 4:15). Temptation is simply being presented with the opportunity to sin; sin is acting on, consciously choosing not to resist, that opportunity. And as someone has said, if sin was not fun, we would not want to do it!
유혹 그 자체는 나쁜 것이 아니다. 성경에서 우리는 예수님까지도 “모든 면에서 우리와 동일하게 시험을 당하셨으나 죄가 없으신 분이기 때문입니다” (히브리서 4:15)라는 말씀을 듣는다. 유혹은 단순히 죄 지을 기회가 주어지는 것이고; 죄는 의식적으로 저항하지 않는 쪽을 택하면서 그 기회를 틈타 행동하는 것이다. 누군가 말한 것처럼 죄가 재미 없는 일이었다면 우리가 그 일을 하고 싶어하지도 않았을 것이다.

Even one of the primary writers in the Bible’s New Testament, the apostle Paul, admitted he struggled with sin himself. “For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do – this I keep on doing” (Romans 7:18-19). Well, if even leaders of the early Church wrestled with right and wrong, what hope is there for us? According to the Bible, there is great hope:
신약성서의 으뜸 가는 저자들 중에 하나인 사도 바울 까지도 자기 자신이 죄와 투쟁하고 있음을 인정하였다. “원함은 내게 있으나 선을 행하는 것은 없습니다. 내가 원하는 선은 행하지 않고 오히려 원하지 않는 악을 행합니다” (로마서 7”18-19). 초대교회의 지도자들마저도 옳고 그름과 씨름하고 있었다면 우리에게 무슨 소망이 있을까? 성경에 따르면 큰 소망이 있다:

We all sin – it is part of our spiritual DNA. According to the Bible, the sin “gene” has been passed down through every human generation since Adam and Eve. So we are not alone with our struggling – and failures – in dealing with temptation. “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
우리 모두는 죄를 짓는다 – 그것은 우리의 영적 유전자의 일부다. 성경에 따르면 그 죄”인자”는 아담과 이브 이래로 모든 인류의 세대를 통하여 전하여 오고 있다. 따라서 우리는 유혹을 다루며 투쟁하는데 – 그리고 그 일에 실패하는데 – 혼자가 아니다. “모든 사람이 죄를 지었으므로 하나님의 영광에 이르지 못합니다” (로마서 3:23).

God will never tempt us to do wrong. In His model prayer, Jesus urged His followers to ask God for deliverance from sin: “…and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one” (Matthew 6:13). The Bible also tells us, “When tempted, no one should say, ‘God is tempting me.’ For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death” (James 1:13-15).
하나님은 결코 우리가 잘못하도록 유혹하지 않는다. 예수님은 본보기 기도를 하시면서 그를 따르는 자들에게 하나님께서 그들을 죄에서 구원해 주시도록 요청하라고 강조하셨다: “…그리고 우리를 시험에 들지 않게 하시고 악에서 구하소서” (마태복음 6:13). 성경은 또한 우리에게, “누구든지 시험을 당할 때 “내가 하나님께 시험을 받고 있다”라고 말하지 마십시오. 하나님은 악에게 시험을 받지도 않으시고 친히 누구를 시험하지도 않으십니다. 각 사람이 시험을 당하는 것은 자신의 욕심에 이끌려 유혹에 빠지기 때문입니다. 욕심이 잉태해 죄를 낳고 죄가 자라 사망을 낳습니다 ” (야고보서 1:13-15)라고 말씀하신다.
 
Our temptations are not unique – and we do not have to submit to them. We may choose to do wrong, but it is not unavoidable or inevitable. Temptations may seem strong, almost irresistible, but through God’s strength we can decide not to act upon them. “No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can stand up under it” (1 Corinthians 10:13). When temptation calls, we have a way out! 
우리의 유혹은 독특한 것이 아니다 – 그리고 우리는 그것들에게 굴복하여서는 안된다. 우리는 잘못하는 쪽을 선택할지는 몰라도 그것이 불가피하거나 필연적인 것은 아니다. 유혹은 강하고 거의 저항할 수 없는 것처럼 보일지 모르지만, 하나님의 능력에 힘입어 우리는 그것에 따라 행동하지 않을 것을 결정할 수 있다. “여러분은 사람이 감당할 수 없는 시험을 당한 적이 없습니다. 하나님은 신실하셔서 여러분이 감당치 못할 시험은 허락하지 않으시며 시험을 당할 때도 피할 길을 마련해 주셔서 여러분이 능히 감당할 수 있게 하십니다” (고린도전서 10:13). 유혹이 찾아오면 우리는 피할 길이 있다!
