일의 축복에 대하여 감사함

This week millions of men, women and children around the world will participate – one way or another – in an annual observance of Thanksgiving Day. In the United States this is an official, national holiday, but regardless of one’s country or culture, an intentional ｅxpression of thanksgiving is always appropriate.
이번 주에는 전 세계에 있는 수 많은 남녀 그리고 어린이들이 – 이런 저런 방식으로 – 매년 추수감사절을 기념하는 일에 참여하게 될 것이다. 미국에서는 이것이 공식적, 국가적인 축제일이지만, 그러나 어떤 나라나 문화에 관계 없이 마음 먹고 감사드림을 표현하는 것은 항상 타당한 일이다.

Most of the people that read “Monday Manna” every week are actively engaged in workplace responsibilities, so it is fitting to consider the act of thankfulness in terms of our vocations and careers. Work has often been referred to as “a necessary evil,” but in reality it is anything but that. Consider just some of the positive aspects of work:
• Work is a means for expressing and utilizing our skills, expertise, and talents.
• Work can help to provide purpose and meaning for our lives.
• Work offers opportunities to pursue our passions – those compelling interests and causes that make us anticipate the start of a new day with enthusiasm.
• Work gives us avenues for serving others in numerous ways.
• Work enables us to fulfill part of our calling as members of God’s creation.
매주 “월요 만나”를 읽는 대부분의 사람들은 일터에서 주어진 일에 활발하게 종사하고 있으므로, 우리의 직업 및 진로와 관련하여 감사함을 표시하려고 생각하는 것은 적합하다. 일은 흔히 “필요악”이라고 표현이 되고 있지만, 그러나 사실 그것은 그 이상의 것이다. 일의 긍정적인 면 몇 가지를 생각해보면:
 일은 우리의 기술, 전문 지식, 그리고 재능을 나타내고 사용하는 수단이다.
 일은 우리의 삶에 대한 목적과 의미를 부여하는데 도움을 준다.
 일은 우리의 열정 – 강렬한 흥미와 우리로 하여금 새로운 하루의 시작을 흥분된 마음으로 기대하도록 하는 이유들 – 을 추구하는 기회들을 제공한다.
 일은 우리에게 여러 가지 방법으로 다른 사람들을 섬기는 길을 터준다.
 일은 우리가 하나님이 창조하신 구성원들로서 우리 소명의 일부를 완수할 수 있게 해준다.

In the opening chapter of the Bible, we read that God gave humankind an assignment: “God blessed them and said to them, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every living creature that moves on the ground’” (Genesis 1:28). Theologians refer to this as the “cultural mandate,” in which God assigned stewardship of the Earth to human beings.
성경의 처음 장에서 우리는 하나님께서 인류에게 임무를 부여하였다고 읽는다: “하나님이 그들에게 복을 주시며 그들에게 이르시되 생육하고 번성하여 땅에 충만하라, 땅을 정복하라, 바다의 고기와 공중의 새와 땅에 움직이는 모든 생물을 다스리라 하시니라” (창세기 1:28). 신학자들은 이것을 “문화 통치권”이라고 일컫는데, 하나님은 이로써 사람들에게 지구에 대한 청지기 직분을 부여하였다.

In a time when many people around the world are still reeling with the effects of a troubled global economy, not having jobs or finding it necessary to engage in jobs far below their capabilities, being thankful for work might be a challenge. But most of us are employed and have many reasons for feeling and voicing thanksgiving for work.
전 세계 많은 사람들이 아직도 험난한 세계경제의 영향으로 몸을 가누지 못하고 있으며, 직업이 없거나 능력에 훨씬 못 미치는 일에 종사하여야 하는 것을 보고 있는 이 때에, 일에 대하여 감사하는 것은 어려운 일일지도 모른다. 그러나 우리 대부분은 채용이 되어 있고 일에 대하여 감사함을 느끼고 말하여야 하는 많은 이유가 있다.

Granted, every job has elements that are less than desirable. For some people, attending meetings amounts to a distraction from the work they enjoy; for others, meetings comprise the most meaningful part of their work. For some people (like me), writing is a pleasurable aspect of work; others would rather do anything but have to write. But that is what makes work so intriguing: None of us is skilled or interested in doing everything. We need one another’s abilities and experience, and can gain the satisfaction of being part of something bigger than ourselves.
모든 직업이 바람직하지 못한 요인들을 갖고 있다는 것은 인정한다. 어떤 사람들에게는, 회의에 참석하는 것이 그들이 즐겁게 하고 있는 일에 집중하지 못하는 것과 같고; 다른 어떤 사람들에게는, 회의가 자신의 일 중에 가장 중요한 부분이 된다. 어떤 사람들(나와 같은)에게, 글을 쓰는 것은 일의 즐거운 면이 되고; 다른 사람들은 글을 쓰는 것이 아닌 다른 어떤 것을 하고 싶어한다. 하지만 그것이 일을 매우 흥미롭게 만드는 점인데: 우리 중에 어느 누구도 모든 일을 하는데 능숙하거나 흥미가 있는 것이 아니다. 우리는 서로 다른 사람들의 능력과 경험이 필요하고, 그리고 우리 자신보다 더 큰 어떤 것의 일부가 된 것에 대하여 만족을 얻을 수 있다.

So this week, as you ponder how and why to be thankful for your work, consider what the Bible says:
그러므로 이번 주에, 일에 대하여 어떻게 그리고 왜 감사하여야 하는지 숙고하면서 성경이 말씀하시는 것을 생각하라:

Work provides a means for meeting our needs. There is no denying that through work we can earn the resources for obtaining food, clothing, shelter and other necessities of life. Work also provides us with dignity and a sense of accomplishment. “The laborer’s appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on” (Proverbs 16:26).
일은 우리의 필요를 충족하는 수단을 제공한다. 일을 통하여 우리가 의식주와 기타 삶에 필요한 것들을 얻기 위한 재원을 벌 수 있다는 것은 부인할 수 없다. 일은 또한 우리에게 품위와 성취감을 제공한다. “노력하는 자는 식욕을 인하여 애쓰나니 이는 그 입이 자기를 독촉함이니라” (잠언 16:26).

Work can be a source of enjoyment. If you enjoy what you do, someone has said, you will never “work” another day in your life. If you have a job that fits your interests and skills, you are especially blessed. “So I saw that there is nothing better for a man than to enjoy his work, because that is his lot” (Ecclesiastes 3:22).
일은 즐거움의 원천이 될 수 있다. 당신이 하고 있는 일을 즐긴다면, 누군가 말하였듯이, 당신은 살아가면서 “노동하는” 날이 더는 없을 것이다. 당신의 흥미와 기술에 부합되는 직업이 있다면 당신은 특별히 축복을 받은 것이다. “그러므로 내 소견에는 사람이 자기 일에 즐거워하는 것보다 나은 것이 없나니 이는 그의 분복이라” (전도서 3:22).

Work is an opportunity to serve God. Our inherent talents and abilities, even though we may have spent years to refine them, ultimately came to us as a gift from God. “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him…. Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men” (Colossians 3:17, 23).
일은 하나님을 섬기는 하나의 기회다.  우리에게 주어진 재능과 능력은, 우리가 그것들을 연마하는데 여러 해를 보내고 있을지라도, 궁극적으로 하나님이 주신 은사로서 우리에게 온다. “또 무엇을 하든지 말에나 일에나 다 주 예수의 이름으로 하고 그를 힘입어 하나님 아버지께 감사하라 … 무슨 일을 하든지 마음을 다하여 주께 하듯 하고 사람에게 하듯 하지 말라  ” (골로새서 3:17, 23).

3. We all have times when we feel thankful for aspects of life in a general sense, but not everyone directs their gratitude toward God. They are more likely to credit luck, circumstances, or even their own efforts for good things that come their way. To whom – or what – do you feel thankful today?
우리 모두는 일반적으로 인생의 여러 측면에 대하여 감사함을 느낄 때가 있으나, 모든 사람들이 자신의 감사함을 하나님께 돌리지는 않는다. 그들은 오히려 도중에 만난 좋은 일들에 대하여 행운, 환경, 혹은 자기 자신의 노력의 덕분이라고 생각한다. 당신은 오늘 누구 – 혹은 무엇 – 에 대하여 감사함을 느낍니까?

 

 

4. If your work is truly “a necessary evil” and nothing more, what possible changes could you make in the coming days to change that? Do you think what is required is a change of attitude, or perhaps a change of location? Explain your answer.
