Years ago I introduced two men that I thought might benefit from working together. Gary was looking for an investor in his business, and Dennis was a candidate. Since Gary and I had just met, however, I forewarned Dennis not to rely on my referral alone.
몇 해 전 나는 함께 일하면 유익할지도 모른다고 생각한 두 사람을 소개시켜 주었다. 게리는 자기 사업에 투자할 사람을 찾고 있었고 데니스가 그 후보자 한 사람이었다. 하지만 게리와 나는 만난 지 얼마 안 되었으므로 나는 데니스에게 나의 추천에만 의존하지 말라고 사전에 주의를 주었다.
 
Dennis impressed me with his focus on character. He informed Gary, "I have one rule. If you lie to me, we're done. It doesn't matter whether it occurs during my due diligence while I am evaluating you or after I have funded the deal. Either way, if you are dishonest with me, our relationship ends that day." Months later, Dennis informed me that he had begun his due diligence and along the way, had caught Gary in a couple of lies. He backed away from completing the business relationship immediately.

Now, with the benefit of 20:20 hindsight, it is clear that Dennis made a good decision. Gary's business initiative failed, and he now faces possible prison time for allegedly defrauding the Internal Revenue Service by falsifying his tax records.
뒤늦게 깨달은 것이지만 데니스가 좋은 결정을 한 것이 분명하여 졌다. 게리가 시작한 사업은 실패를 하였고 이제 그는 세무자료를 거짓 작성하여 국세청을 기만한 혐의로 실형을 받을 처지가 되었다.
 
My friend Dennis's philosophy mirrors Proverbs 12:22, which says, "The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful." If you're in a business relationship with someone that lies to you, consider Dennis's philosophy. It will likely protect you from harm – both before entering into a business relationship and after the deal has been formalized.
내 친구 데니스의 철학은 잠언 12:22를 반영하는데, “거짓말하는 입술은 여호와께서 싫어하시지만 진실한 사람들은 기뻐하신다” 라고 말씀하신다. 누군가 거짓말을 하는 사람과 사업관계에 있으면 데니스의 철학을 생각하라. 그것이 당신이 해를 입지 않도록 보호할지도 모르며 – 사업관계 수립 이전이나 거래가 이루어진 후 모두 그러하다.

Unfortunately, we live in a world in which moral and ethical standards have been compromised and once clear-cut behavioral boundaries have been blurred. Even the best business schools cannot agree on a universal code of ethics; in fact, most would contend there is no such thing as absolute truth. Is it any wonder that virtues such as truth are taken so lightly by many business leaders?
불행히도 우리는 도덕적이고 윤리적인 기준이 타협되어지고 한 때 분명하던 행동 영역이 흐리멍덩해진 세상에 살고 있다. 가장 좋은 비즈니스 스쿨들 조차도 보편적인 윤리 규범에 동의하지 못하고, 사실 대다수는 절대적인 진리와 같은 것은 없다고 주장한다. 진리와 같은 덕목들이 많은 사업 지도자들에게 경시된다는 것이 무슨 이상한 일인가?

One astute observer of society has made this observation: We have taken morality out of the universities and have told students there are no moral absolutes. As a result, instead of putting dishonest leaders in prison, we have put them on pedestals – they are just doing what they were trained to do.
예리하게 사회를 관찰하는 한 사람이 자신의 견해를 밝혔는데: 우리는 대학에서 도덕성을 제거하고 학생들에게 도덕의 절대성은 없다고 말하고 있다. 그 결과 부정직한 지도자들을 감옥에 집어넣는 대신 우리는 그들을 상급자로 받들고 – 그들은 훈련 받은 대로 행하고 있다.

This, however, does not release us from upholding high moral and ethical standards in the workplace. In fact, the person who aspires to leadership should make such values of paramount importance. Consider just a few of the statements the Old Testament book of Proverbs makes about honesty:
하지만 이러한 것들이 우리가 직장에서 높은 도덕적 윤리적 기준을 받들어 지키는 일에서 벗어나게 하지는 못한다. 사실 리더십을 열망하는 사람은 그와 같이 최상으로 중요한 가치를 실현해야 한다. 구약성서 잠언서에서 정직에 대하여 언급한 말씀 몇 가지를 생각해보자:

•         Dishonesty is detestable to God. “The Lord abhors dishonest scales, but accurate weights are his delight” (Proverbs 11:1). “The Lord detests lying lips, but he delights in men who are truthful” (Proverbs 12:22)
          부정직은 하나님께서 싫어하신다. “여호와는 속이는 저울을 싫어하시고 정확한 추를 기뻐하신다”(잠언 11:1). “거짓말하는 입술은 여호와께서 싫어하시지만 진실한 사람들은 기뻐하신다” (잠언 12:22).
•         Dishonesty yields fleeting rewards. “Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment” (Proverbs 12:19). “A fortune made by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor and a deadly snare” (Proverbs 21:6).
          부정직은 사라져버리는 보상을 낳는다. “진실한 입술은 영원히 남지만 거짓말하는 혀는 오래가지 못한다” (잠언 12:19). “거짓말하는 혀로 얻은 보물은 죽음을 구하는 자들의 사라지는 물거품과 같다” (잠언 21:6).
•         Dishonesty results in punishment. “A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who pours out lies will perish” (Proverbs 19:9).
          부정직은 형벌을 초래한다. “가짜 증인은 벌을 피하지 못하며 거짓말을 잘하는 사람은 쓰러질 것이다” (잠언 19:9).
•         Dishonesty deceives the deceiver. “Food gained by fraud tastes sweet to a man, but he ends up with a mouth full of gravel” (Proverbs 20:17).
          부정직은 속이는 자를 속인다. “사람들은 속여서 얻은 빵이 달다고 하지만 나중에는 그 입이 자갈로 가득 차게 된다” (잠언 20:17).
