윤리적 ‘긴급대책’이 절실하게 필요하다

Adversity often has a way of bringing out the worst in people. The ongoing global economic challenges have served to expose the depths of our moral depravity. We have heard and read numerous instances in which financial calamity has resulted in unethical and immoral behavior. When markets collapse, people become understandably anxious and want to regain any money they have lost. But this does not excuse fraud and deceitful activity – the end does not justify the means.

역경은 종종 사람들로부터 최악을 끌어내는 하나의 통로가 된다. 현재 진행중인 지구상의 경제적 시련은 우리들의 도덕적 타락이 깊음을 드러내는데 일조를 하였다. 우리는 경제적 재앙이 비윤리적이고 비도덕적인 행위를 초래한 수많은 예들을 듣고 읽고 있다. 시장이 무너지면 사람들은 당연히 걱정을 하게 되고 잃어버린 돈을 되찾고 싶어한다. 그러나 이것이 사기와 기만행위에 대한 구실이 될 수 없고 – 목적이 수단을 정당화하지 못한다.

 
In seeking to find solutions to the economic recession, government leaders have proposed – and in some cases instituted – financial “bailouts,” providing huge amounts of funds to sustain various industries. It is my belief, however, that instead of a financial bailout, what we need most is an ethical bailout.

경제불황에 대한 해결책을 찾아보려고 정부 지도자들은 경제적인 “긴급대책”을 제안 – 어떤 경우에는 설치 – 하였는데 이는 다양한 산업들을 지탱하기 위하여 막대한 금액의 자금을 공급하는 것이다. 하지만 경제적인 긴급대책 대신에 우리가 가장 필요로 하는 것은 윤리적인 긴급대책이라고 나는 믿는다.

 

Whether it has been the subprime loan crisis, elected officials selling political favors, or an internationally known financial advisor allegedly duping some of the wealthiest people in the world in an elaborate investment scheme, the fundamental underlying issue for each these scandals has been the same: a chronic lack of integrity.

그것이 최 우대 대출금리보다 낮은 대출 관련 위기든, 선출된 공무원들이 정치적인 특혜를 매매하는 것이든, 혹은 알려진 바와 같이 국제적으로 이름 있는 경제 자문역이 세계적으로 가장 부유한 사람들 중에 몇을 그들이 공들인 투자계획과 관련하여 속였든, 이러한 스캔들의 저변에 깔려있는 기본적인 문제는 동일한데: 그것은 만성적인 성실성의 결핍이다.

 At its essence, integrity is an outward manifestation of inner character. What we do – and how we do it – reflects who we really are on the inside. Sadly, strong character is not something that can be learned through curriculum while pursuing an MBA at a top business school. And we do not find character among the required categories listed on a top executive’s curriculum vitae. It is a quality that must be cultivated over time.

Some factors, however, can help to develop and sustain true integrity. one of them is a healthy dose of fear. Unfortunately, many of our most prominent business and professional leaders no longer fear the law, their customers, or even their own conscience. They have grown calloused, hardened, to revered, time-tested values such as honesty, trustworthiness, quality and excellence. All that matters for them are their own selfish goals.

하지만 어떤 요인들은 진정한 성실성을 개발하고 유지하는데 도움을 줄 수 있다. 그들 중에 하나는 건전한 두려움의 투약이다. 불행히도 가장 탁월한 우리의 사업과 전문직 지도자들 중에 대다수가 더 이상 법, 그들의 고객, 혹은 그들 자신의 양심까지도 두려워하지 않는다. 그들은 정직성, 신뢰성, 품성과 탁월성과 같이 존경을 받고 오랜 세월 시험을 거친 가치에 대하여 무디어지고 경직되었다. 그들에게 중요한 것의 전부는 그들 자신의 이기적인 목표다.

 

What will it take to bail out our morality, to restore a climate of high ethical standards in the 21^st century marketplace? Let me suggest that we consult an ancient, yet timeless resource – the Bible. In its pages we find an unlimited supply of wisdom and guidance for working and living in a consistent, forthright manner that keeps everyone’s best interests in the forefront.

우리의 도덕성을 긴급 구제하고 21세기 시장에서 높은 윤리적 표준의 풍조를 회복하기 위하여 어떻게 하여야 하나? 나는 오래된, 그러나 영원한 자원 – 성경 – 을 찾아보라고 제안한다. 성경 속에서 우리는 모든 사람들의 최상의 이익을 최우선에 두고 일관되고 솔직한 자세로 일하면서 살아가는데 필요한 지혜와 지침을 무제한으로 공급하여 주는 것을 발견한다.

 

Proverbs 16:6, found in the Bible’s Old Testament, provides a good start. It says, "By steadfast love and faithfulness iniquity is atoned for, and by the fear of the Lord one turns away from evil.” Many of us have lost “the fear of the Lord,” the conviction that God holds us accountable for our actions.

잠언 16:6은 구약성서에서 찾아볼 수 있는데, 훌륭한 서두가 된다. 말씀하시되, “사람이 어질고 진실하게 살면 죄를 용서 받고 여호와를 경외하면 악을 피할 수 있다” 우리들 대다수가 “주님에 대한 두려움”, 하나님이 우리의 행위에 대하여 우리에게 책임을 지게 한다는 확신을 상실하였다.

 

There is another important aspect to “the fear of the Lord” that can help in restoring a strong ethical environment in the workplace. We read in Proverbs 1:7, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” In a world of growing uncertainty and unpredictability, who could not use more wisdom and knowledge? This is one of the great promises God makes to those who follow Him.

“주님에 대한 두려움”에는 직장에서 강력한 윤리적 환경을 회복하는데 도움을 줄 수 있는 또 하나의 중요한 면이 있다. 우리는 잠언 1:7에서, “여호와를 두려워하며 섬기는 것이 지식의 시작인데 어리석은 사람들은 지혜와 교훈을 가볍게 여긴다.” 라는 말씀을 읽는다. 불확실성과 예측불능 성향이 점점 커가는 세상에서 누가 더 많은 지혜와 지식을 사용할 수 없을까? 이것은 하나님께서 그분을 따르는 자들에게 하신 위대한 약속들 중에 하나다.

 

Do you see people in your workplace who have become desensitized morally and ethically? Pray for them to discover the fear of the Lord and the need to atone for their immorality. only God can provide an ethical bailout.

직장에서 도덕적 윤리적으로 무감각해진 사람들을 봅니까? 주님에 대한 두려움과 그들의 부도덕성에 대하여 용서 받아야 할 필요성을 발견하도록 그들을 위하여 기도하라. 오직 하나님만이 윤리적 긴급대책을 제공하실 수 있다.
