감사해야 할 이유 찾기

Even with more than a month remaining, 2008 already has been an unusual, dramatic year. Economically it has been characterized by turmoil, anxiety and frustration. Huge corporations, once central to the global economy, have either been shut down, acquired by other companies, or have undergone major reorganization to survive.
아직 한 달 이상 남아 있지만 2008년은 이미 유난스럽고 극적인 한 해가 되고 있다. 경제적으로는 혼란, 불안 그리고 좌절이라는 말로 특징지어질 한 해다. 거대한 기업들은 한 때 세계경제의 중심에 있었지만 문을 닫거나, 다른 회사들에게 인수를 당하거나 혹은 생존하기 위하여 대대적인 구조조정을 단행하였다.

The United States has elected a new President. It was a bitter, vindictive campaign for the most part. Everyone, not only across the country but also around the world, is wondering what the outcome will ultimately mean over the next four years – and beyond. Major changes among top leaders in other nations have raised some of the same uncertainties. Prospects for world peace, more often than not, seem mere fantasy.
미국은 새 대통령을 선출하였다. 선거전은 전반적으로 격렬하고 적대감에 차 있었다. 나라 전체뿐만 아니라 전세계에 걸쳐 모든 사람들이 선거 결과가 앞으로 4년 – 그리고 그 이상의 기간에 걸쳐 궁극적으로 무엇을 뜻하는지 의아스럽게 생각하고 있다. 다른 나라 최고 지도자들의 주요 변화는 동일한 불확실성을 불러 일으켰다. 세계평화에 대한 전망은 대체로 한낱 환상으로 보인다.

In terms of technology, major strides have been made in communications, entertainment and many other areas. Not all of these advances, of course, have been positive. Cell phones, for example, have been blamed in a number of transportation-related disasters. Many people continue to harbor a “love them, hate them” attitude toward their computers. They are wonderful when they are working, but when they freeze up or crash, we are tempted to heave them out a window.
기술면에서는 통신, 엔터테인먼트 및 기타 여러 분야에서 주요한 진척이 있었다. 물론 이러한 발전 모두가 긍정적인 것은 아니다. 예컨대 휴대폰은 많은 교통사고의 원인이 되어왔다. 많은 사람들이 컴퓨터에 대하여 “좋아하기도 하고, 싫어하기도 하는” 마음을 지속적으로 갖고 있다. 작동을 할 때는 훌륭하지만 멈추거나 깨어지면 창문 밖으로 밀어 내던지고 싶은 충동을 갖게 된다.

Mother Nature has again made a strong impression, with earthquakes, hurricanes, forest fires, dramatic extremes in temperature and precipitation, and fears of global warming often dominating our collective psyche. And for many of us, our personal lives have mirrored the chaotic world in which we live: Health struggles, marital strife, troubled children, financial struggles, job changes, and other problems have taken emotional and psychological tolls. Fears have kept us awake at night; dread during the day has left us longing for night to come again.
대자연은 다시 지진, 허리케인, 산불, 기후와 강수량의 놀랍고 극심한 현상, 그리고 종종 우리 모두의 마음을 사로잡는 지구 온난화에 대한 두려움 등으로 강렬한 인상을 남겨 주었다. 그리고 우리 많은 사람들에게 개인적인 삶은 우리가 살고 있는 혼돈의 세계를 반영하고 있다. 즉, 건강의 어려움, 결혼생활의 갈등, 문제자녀, 경제적인 어려움, 직업의 변화, 그리고 기타의 문제들이 정서적 심리적 대가를 치르게 하였다. 두려움이 밤에 우리를 잠 못 이루게 하고, 낮 동안의 공포가 밤이 다시 오기를 학수고대하게 한다.

With all of this “bad news” as a backdrop, this is the time of year when citizens in the U.S.A., along with many in other nations, hold annual Thanksgiving observances. What, we might ask, is there to be thankful for? At first glance, we might not see much. But if we think a bit harder, there is far more to give thanks for than we realized. The Bible says that, at least for those who trust in God, there are many reasons to give thanks, including:
이 모든 “나쁜 소식”을 뒤에 하고, 지금은 미국의 국민들이 많은 다른 나라의 사람들과 함께 매년 지내는 추수 감사절을 보내는 때이다. 감사할 일이 무엇인가 라고 우리는 반문할지 모른다. 처음에 얼핏 봐서는 많은 것을 찾지 못할지도 모른다. 그러나 우리가 좀 더 깊이 생각하면 깨닫는 것보다 감사를 드려야 할 일이 훨씬 더 많다. 성경은 적어도 하나님을 믿는 사람들에게는 다음 사항을 포함하여 감사를 드려야 할 많은 이유들이 있다고 말씀하신다.

For seeing order in the midst of chaos. Even in the midst of life’s storms, God has a sovereign plan for each of His followers. He solemnly promises to bring that plan to fruition. “’For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (Jeremiah 29:11).
혼돈 가운데 질서를 보는 것에 대하여. 삶의 폭풍 중에서도 하나님은 당신을 따르는 자들 각자에 대하여 최상의 계획을 갖고 계신다. 그분은 그 계획이 결실을 맺을 것이라고 엄숙히 약속하신다. “여호와의 말이다. 내가 너희를 위해 갖고 있는 계획들을 내가 알고 있으니 그것은 평안을 위한 계획이지 재앙을 위한 것이 아니며 너희에게 미래와 소망을 주기 위한 것이다” (예레미야 29:11).

For noble work to perform. Part of this plan is the unique design God has for each of His followers. He equips us with special gifts, abilities and experience to carry out our “job descriptions.” “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians 2:10).
수행할 고귀한 일에 대하여.  이 계획의 일부는 하나님이 자신을 따르는 자들 각자에 대하여 가지신 독특한 계획이다. 그분은 우리에게 주어진 “업무내역”을 수행하기 위한 특별한 은사, 능력 그리고 경험을 우리가 갖추도록 하여 주신다. “우리는 하나님께서 미리 예비하신 선한 일들을 위해 그리스도 예수 안에서 창조된 하나님의 피조물입니다. 하나님께서는 우리가 선한 일들을 행하며 살기를 원하십니다” (에베소서 2:10).

For daily provision. Nowhere in the Scriptures does God promise that we will acquire all our wants or fulfill all our desires, but He does promise to meet our needs. “Give us this daily our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). “And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:19).
일용할 양식에 대하여.  성경 어디에도 하나님이 우리가 원하는 것 모두를 갖게 되거나 우리의 모든 욕망을 채우게 될 것이라고 약속하시지 않았으나 그분은 우리의 필요를 채워주시겠다고 약속하신다. “오늘 우리에게 꼭 필요한 양식을 내려주시고” (마태복음 6:11). “내 하나님께서 그리스도 예수 안에서 영광 가운데 그분의 풍성하심을 따라 여러분의 모든 필요를 채워 주실 것입니다” (빌립보서 4:19).

For hope even when the future looks dark. God promised Abraham, aged and childless, would become the father of many nations, with descendants beyond counting. Abraham could have lost hope, but found God faithful in keeping this promise. “Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and became the father of many nations…. Yet he did not waver in unbelief…but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God” (Romans 4:18-20).
미래가 어두워 보일 때라도 소망을 갖도록.  하나님은 아브라함이 나이가 많고 아이가 없을 때에 열국의 아버지가 되고 자손이 헤아릴 수 없을 정도로 많을 것이라고 약속을 하셨다. 아브라함은 소망을 잃었을 수도 있지만 하나님이 이 약속을 충실하게 지킨다는 것을 알았다. “아브라함은 소망이 없는 가운데서도 소망을 갖고 믿었습니다. 이는 많은 민족의 조상이 되게 하기 위한 것이었습니다 … 그는 하나님의 약속을 믿고 의심하지 않았고 …도리어 믿음이 굳건해져서 하나님께 영광을 돌리고” (로마서 4:18-20).
